I am pulling my hair out here — really crazy issues with renders…

Will do my best to describe:

I am editing a feature film. We have approximately 40 hours of material.

When my assistant set the project up, he captured all of the media into a project called:
SOURCES — then he made a subclip project called SCENES to break down the material — then he made a project called EDITS from which I have been working.

We are working on Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6.0.1)
The material is all captured in Prores 422 (HQ) 24p
    We are working on a MacPro 2 x 2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    11 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
We have 3 internal hard drives — each have more than 70GB free space

Here’s where the problems started — and they are varied so I will just list some examples.

    1) I built some mock effects with still images — I put some TIFF files on top of the video with basic motion manipulation. If I step through without rendering it looks ok. Sometimes they even play fine pre-render. As soon as we render, the TIFFs are replaced with random stills from the source footage! Totally different file names — no correlation to the scene — just totally random!

    2) I have some shots in which i used the garbage matte effect to clean up elements within the shot. Again — it plays fine pre-render but when it renders it not only kills the 8 point garbage matte, but it suddenly gives the higher layer an ADD effect! So we end up with a crazy double exposure.

    3) I have a lot of green screen shots in the film. We are using the chroma key effect to test the shots out for the offline. I will create a chroma key that looks great — it renders and the effect is totally trashed. It kills all the adjustments that I made and it becomes a sloppy green.

    4) I have some multi-panel effects in the film and these turn into triple exposures and strange freeze frames.

    5) Some shots where we did speed changes (high speed ramps, etc) will start to play and then just turn into a freeze frame which will actually somehow manage to overlap the next shots!

Anyway, the list goes on and on….

Here is what we tried to do to fix it:

    1) Another editor suggested that I consolidate all of the projects (SOURCE, SUBCLIPS and EDITS) into one massive project so that FCP doesn’t get confused searching for media. We did this and it resolved 1 or 2 of the problems, but the film has at least 30 or more trouble areas)

    2) I tried to rebuild the effects — changing them by a frame or two and/or starting from scratch. The problems always come back.

Any leads? I am going nuts.

    Thanks in advance!

Have you tried loading the project on another computer? Even a latop – mount the drives over the network, dupe the project file, and attempt a render.

Take out the 1GB Apple ram that came in the computer. Don’t quote me, but I thought I heard the Intel macs are buggy with odd amounts of RAM or mismatched RAM.
