good choice. All their RAIDs are guaranteed to handle 1080i/29.97 4:2:2. I get about 210 MB/s typically. So that covers most HD data rates unless you’re getting into 4:4:4 or 2K. And the price is defiantly right.
Did you get fibre? One small gripe I had was they only give you 1 LC-SFP transciever… so I had to buy another one from Macmall in order to use the fibre optic cables.

Well, IMHO, stay with version 5 if you’re starting into a new big job. If you’ve seen my recent posts, we upgraded to 6 a couple weeks ago, and based on the myriad of problems my editors were having (and my sleepless night problem solving), we’ve gone back to 5. It’s stable, it works. FCP6 doesn’t really give you anything particularly different that’s a must have.

Is is a bit sad for 6 months of being on the market that these glaring problems exist. You have the feeling Apple got so excited to bundle Color in and show off at NAB that they made this crap upgrade to FCP6 without fully testing it.
They love showing off how you can have 5 streams of HDV with RT effects and how you can easily edit with it….. but flash is not substance.
Does Apple have a beta program in place for FCP? it could use the input of trench warfare editors that really beat on it.

I never thought to really why Avid had their own versions of Quicktime codecs, and all those OMF variations -assuming they were just being different for the sake of elitism – but it totally makes sense now. They had to strangle QT so it would act in a more sensible manner.
I still like the rumor of FCP Extreme. I think Apple has a goldmine on their hands with the possibility of tapping an oil field.

Just an aside, I have the same Mac/RAM as you… Compressor 3 is PAINFULLY slow encoding Mpeg-2. slower than my old G5! I’ve seen a couple other posts of people having problems with Compressor and Mpeg-2 as well.
But encoding in DVDSP with it’s internal encoder is lightning fast.

Yep. pillarboxed HD. Sometimes we transfer full aperture 35mm to HD this way so we get the entire film frame (which is 4:3 by nature). So you have side mattes on your 1080 frame with a square picture the middle.

Yup. from what other have said on here, FCP would need to be re-written from the ground up to fix it’s Media Management problems. It’s a house built on the sand….
…maybe Apple should buy Avid. Avid has strong media management if nothing else.

haven’t had any problems with mine….. but I would suggest downloading Temperature Monitor and keep it running the background – maybe something’s overheating and it’s powering down?
