8 cores shutting down
Posted by Bob on November 13, 2007 at 10:29 pmWe have two 8 cores that power completely down when trying to tackle a large render in FCP 6. It’s like someone pulled the plug
Has anyone else had this happen?

November 13, 2007 at 10:38 pmI just posted a similar problem. Have not had a response yet. I also have a 8 core that is shutting down and then restarting all on its own, while attempting a long render. Every single time I set a long render, it unexpectedly quits.

November 13, 2007 at 10:46 pmhaven’t had any problems with mine….. but I would suggest downloading Temperature Monitor and keep it running the background – maybe something’s overheating and it’s powering down?
Are you one conditioned power?

November 13, 2007 at 10:56 pmI am not conditioned power.
I have tried this project on another 8 core computer and still Final Cut will quit.
I tried another 8 core it is still quit.
The only thing common in this scenario is the media that I am using, if that helps.
How do know if a clip is corrupt in Final Cut?Jeff Cohen, Pres.

November 13, 2007 at 11:01 pmif your not on conditioned power are you at least on an independant circuit on the 8 core?
Those things suck down some serious power and rendering would certainly test the limits of that.
what are you rendering?
is the monitor going to sleep first?

November 13, 2007 at 11:55 pmHoly crap, you are saying the computer turns off?
Do you have any settings in your energy saver prefs that would turn your computer off overnight? Be sure to click the “Schedule…” button.

November 14, 2007 at 2:11 amI have a few ideas that might help:
1. Delete Preferences, currupted preferences can crash FCP or even crash Mac OS X(not sure about it shutting down)
2. Make sure your computer is has enough breathing room. If it is in a room that is small or gets hot this can over heat the computer.
3. Use a free widget or app like iStat to make sure none of the components are over heating, this happened to me a couple times.
4. Go to an Apple store, your motherboard and/or power supply might not be functioning right. My Mac Pro was shutting down by itself; I found out that my Power Supply was faulted(Although I doubt this is the problem for you).
5. Another option is to use the project manager to create a new copied project of this. This can help if your project file is currupted.
Hope you fix the problem, good luck!!

My computer has plenty of breathing room although I have not tested to see if it is overheating. I will do that today. When you say “use the project manager to create a new copied project”, do you mean use the media manager? I have made a copy using media manager and still the same problem.
Today when I came in to my studio, Final Cut had quit again. Shocker. This time upon reopening my project, it could not connect to a file so I reconnected to it. Things seem to be going crazy now. I have tried removing the media drives and system drive and installing on another 8 core with the exact same configuration, and it still crashed upon rendering long renders.

November 14, 2007 at 2:30 pmI am on a separate circuit with my other computer which is a G4 dual. I am rendering DVC Pro HD 720p, HDV and SD all on a SD timeline.

November 14, 2007 at 2:53 pmI have installed istat and I am monitoring it while rendering. What is a safe temperature to be looking for?
