Man, that completely sucks! What are they thinking?!?! The “pro” in Final Cut Pro is diminishing all the time.
Dear Apple: let the professional users decide if they want to keep their D1 pixels in the pipeline. do not arbitrarily go resizing things so Uncle Bob with his Lame Home Videos can make better iDVD’s. Thank You – A Video Professional

What color are your titles? Are they broadcast safe?

Not really. Your best bet is to digitize your source material at ProRes or DVCPRO-HD for your offline edit. Then it’s a simple matter of recapturing at uncompressed HD later.
It’s a joy to work in 24fps all the way, no pesky 3:2, and ProRes looks incredible and can run off FW800

I hate that deck. Just go ahead and record something… when you playback it should be fine – no rolling black bar. I have that exact problem here, but since it records perfectly fine and we rarely make SP tapes anymore I don’t bother troubleshooting it.

Final Cut 6?
When you import your clips in Final Cut, right click and open “Image Format” There’s a data field for gamma on the clip, try typing in 2.2. Final Cut assumes non-video codecs are 1.8 gamma.

I think you might be onto something Jeremy. P2LogPro doesn’t see 24pN correctly – it’s reporting the media as 59.94. And when you us P2Log to export and XML to Final Cut, you’re getting 59.94 media in Final Cut. So it might be blasting out the duplicate frame flags.

Yes, problem. I would mixdown your entire program, bring it back in as a single new video clip and put the filter on that.

It looks worse on Apple’s DVD player program than on a real TV. Thanks for pointing that out.
But I’m looking at the titles for the newer “Dawn of the Dead” which are dark, blood red on black. They exhibit similar problems, but not NEARLY as bad as I’m seeing. Mine are are darkish footage. So I’m wondering if there’s a specific trick they’re using on encode… I’ll rip the movie and research it a little more.

It’s all ship shape. Looks beautiful in HD, looks beautiful with Kona 3 SD downconversion. Looks so bad in DVD colorspace…. it’s depressing!
