Now Ajmetz, has a pretty girl arrived on my doorstep or are you referring to Media 100 giving news on supporting XDCAM Ex media? I can’t quite follow your hints and can see nothing elsewhere, can you enlighten me?

Noah, when a DVCAM deck costs £4,000 and an HDCAM costs £36,000 why should that be any time soon? I get great DVCAM masters (sometimes off an HD timeline, sometimes from a rented HDCAM deck) and the quality is supurb.

Norm, it was me. First of all we should tell Robert that we are talking about the new Sony EX1 camera which is part of the XDCAM family and records to S X S cards and the acquisition of this media into Media 100 is causing us(and particularly their engineers)problems. There was suggested an interim solution by using the Sony Clip Browsing software to convert the media into .mov I think and then using QT to get it into Media 100. I believe however that the software can only be used with the Mac Pro (Intel) which I don’t have. Anyhow I abandoned this approach and currently shoot in HDV mode (which I then convert to HD) for editing in Media 100. All EX1 users who edit in Media 100 hope (and expect) that by the end of the year a proper solution will have been provided to handle media in full HD from the cards. Currently it is possible to take HD as video directly from the camera through the SDI out but the audio is embedded.

Norm, does that answer your question?

Robert, I wouldn’t be too ‘snooty’ about BitVice, it’s bloody marvellous and the company Innobits in Sweden do a great job. Wait ’til you use it, you’ll see.

I’m with you there Floh, no way do I want to get involved with FCP and all the odd way they do things. Straight and simple Media 100, great media management, intuitive editing and a Boris team who seem intent on keeping up to date even though they seem to be struggling with the Sony EX systems! HDV is easy enough for me with the Convergent Design HD-Connect with no time wasted on conversion whatsoever.

Have a look at the Vortex Media 2 disc workshop for the EX1. There they demo various shutter speeds and go into the whole question very carefully. it all depends on what effect you want to create.

Chris, that’s odd, I find the levels are tending to ‘clip’ at the camera default settings. With most mics I have to reduce the menu settings to around -38 to -40.

‘Hair in the gate’, wow your’e taking us all back to the days when we understood what the heck was going on! The kids today will be mystified though. Kurt, I too enjoyed your humour, let’s have some more.
