I just compared some EX footage I shot with a shutter speed of 1/30 (1080 / 30p w/ shutter off) with footage I shot at 1/60 (720/60p w/ shutter off) and my pans at 1/30 appear smoother. I would have expected it to be the opposite. Is it because I’m getting some motion blur at 1/30?

Have a look at the Vortex Media 2 disc workshop for the EX1. There they demo various shutter speeds and go into the whole question very carefully. it all depends on what effect you want to create.

Yeah, unfortunately he doesn’t talk about or show examples shot in 60p. My footage was shot in 720/60p with shutter off (1/60) and my pans have a slight stutter, whereas footage shot in 30p with shutter off (1/30) look smoother to me.
