Floh, does that mean you can master (via firewire) back to HDV tape?

Paul, why are you confused? I said exactly what I (and others) want. We want the same contraption over the screen that the EX3 has. Have you seen it, it’s so much better than trying to look at the screen of the EX1 in daylight and trying to focus. Even max peaking is not sufficient and can even be confusing if you are in a hurry.

Of course some of us are getting older but I can handle the ergonomics (just) but it’s the focussing that is the real worry for me. My eyes are pretty good but in the bright light the screen is impossible. The EX3 system adapted in some way must be the answer where we can view the magnified screen through a properly shielded eye piece. Can we all lobby for this?

Great stuff Steve, the camerwork was brilliant, the subject hardly ever strayed from the centre of the frame. What encoder will you be doing your Blu-Ray with and what players will there be to guarantee playing what you burn? No menus I presume though, I’m told they won’t be possible, not that I care, just want to have the movie playing!

Having now had quite some experience of shooting with the EX1 I have to say I’m a bit frustrated. Mainly with the point raised earlier, namely focussing in bright sunlight. The screen, even hooded, is impossible to see and the finder is really only good for framing. I am hoping that Sony do some sort of conversion incorporating the wonderful finder that goes over the screen on the EX3. This is really easy to focus with because your eye fits right on to an eye cup and a magnifying glass works wonders on the screen. The problem is the unit is heavier and the EX3 has a suitable bracket to support it which the EX1 doesn’t have. You might say buy the EX3 but it’s heavier and more expensive, I’d rather adapt the EX1 if we can.

Thanks Don, I think that your method sounds better as at least you can be certain you are locked on before trusting the auto.

Doug Jensen, author of the Vortex Media DVD EX1 Workshop, suggests that you keep the focus switch always set to ‘auto’ and when you want to operate the focus manually (most of the time) you pull the ring towards you. If you want auto he suggests just pushing the ring away which is quicker and easier than hunting around for the switch. Don, your suggestion contradicts this, which confuses me somewhat, I thought I had it sussed.

Don, don’t worry, I get very confused with all these technology changes, it was ever so much simpler with film! Nevertheless, ‘Michael’s editing life is good again’ with the prospect of editing EX material in my favourite Media 100.

Not quite yet for me, right in the middle of an edit with stuff all shot in HDV mode (then to tape) pending Media 100 seeing the light! Good news though, nice to hear it works OK. Can you choose which sections of clips you want to acquire or does the whole clip (take) have to come in?

Thanks Floh, this seems to have happened very quietly with no fanfare at all. I have asked my supplier for details as I suspect I will need the Mac Pro (I am still on the HDx board). What do you make of Chris’s criticism of the downscale quality? I have always found the Media 100 downscale to be as good as the one on BitVice, I hope that Innobits new updates have maintained the quality.
