That’s ridiculous surely. I hope to get version 13 (don’t have 12.7) to suppoert my EX1 as I understood Media 100 now do. Why then do we have to have FCP? I have no intention of getting FCP as I’m a Media 100 man.

September 11, 2008 at 9:25 am in reply to: Black levels on By-Ref and SelfContained clipsEven with BitVice I find that contrast (& black) is diluted somewhat and have lately taken to increasing contrast levels after I have done my tape master and before exporting by reference and using BitVice to encode the .Mov file.

Thanks David for that. A couple of supplementary questions. No problem converting the files into editable clips within Media 100? Do you notice a huge difference in accurate focussing between the small screen of the EX1 and the magnified image on the EX3? I am trying to get Sony to do some sort of adapter for the EX1. Apologies to fellow Cow readers for straying off topic.

As a first timer with Media 100 ten years ago with version 6 may I add my “Thank goodness for Boris” to the others. Two questions to those who might have answers.
1. Will version 13 still be good for the pre intel Mac G5 and the HDx board?
2. Are any EX1 camera users finding any problems with the support introduced in version 12.7?Michael Slowe

Glad to hear that Noah but an audience of film makers in the cinema we were using couldn’t see the difference on a huge screen. What you say however must make sense and the finished SD DVD must benefit from the higher res.

There is every point Rafael and I do it all the time. We have the bigger chips (CMOS), better lens, proper control etc with the EX1 AND the option of going out to HDV tape via firewire. I’ve done tests on a huge cinema screen and there was not an obvious difference between the 35Mbps material and the 25 although it must be preferable to shoot 35 all other considerations being equal.

Yes but Chris I think he wants to know whether he can actually read the files once he has transferred them or does he need the extra Sony software that is required to read the media shot in HQ. For myself I currently transfer my EX1 SP (HDV) media to tape via firewire but he doesn’t want to do that it seems.

Don has the right idea but it is a struggle. I too jam into the finder but you can’t rely on it for focussing so have to be in auto focus for that. The real answer would be to have an adaptation of the EX3 finder that I have been begging Sony to investigate. Anyone going to IBC in Amsterdam please push for this. I know Sony would say “buy the EX3” but I’ve just bought the EX1 and anyway the 3 is heavier.

Wickham, while you are on line (Media 100 never sleeps) can you tell me if the quality of the downconvert (conform) in the HDx systems is maintained in the new AJA versions? They operate differently don’t they and I find the HDx conform quality quite brilliant. I used to do the downconvert within BitVice but now believe that the Media 100 is better.

So Chris, am I right in saying that with this ‘HDV support’ I am no better off than I currently am by pushing HDV media through the Convergent Design HD-Connect and editing in uncompressed 1920 X 1080i. I then either master to HDCAM for archive, downscale to DV and DVD for distribution and exhibition. I just thought that it might be useful to also obtain an HDV master to project in HD (more or less!) through one of the newer projectors that handle HD. Blu-Ray DVD’s are obviously the answer when HD becomes the norm.
