Whilst quite a few of you experts have put the poster right about trashing camera original media files my questions centre on how to store the finished production. I confess that I never kept original tapes after a project was edited and mastered (to tape) but I guarded my tape masters like gold dust. It was Craig I think who said tape was finished and of course in the long run he is right. That being so what do we master to? Drives can’t be as safe as tape surely. DVD’s currently MPEG2, can’t compare with tape for quality and we don’t yet know their longevity. Blu-Ray seems to me the answer as far as quality goes but although Toast version 9 can burn them what spftware encodes them?

Max, the thing about the Vortex brace is that it sounds as though you can get the camera higher than yours. I find that shooting people (sounds illegal) I constantly have to remember to keep the camera in their eyeline otherwise you get the dreaded ‘nostril’ shot.

Max, does it look anything like the Vortex one, if you’ve seen a picture of it? I use the EX1 but it still could use a brace but it’s lighter than the EX3.

The Vortex does look interesting but quite cumbersome. I have often meant to ask if anyone has used it. Had a feel of the EX3 today but it’s not any easier than the EX1 and it’s heavier and more expensive! I investigated the possibility of getting the eyepiece attachment of the EX3 from Sony and finding a way to fix it on to the EX1 screen. Could be done, it’s not heavy and it un clips. I found also that it would cost over £300, crazy when you see what it really is!

Oh my goodness Craig. I’m due for a firmware upgrade at my Sony seller tomorrow! Should I not bother? I got my EX1 last Summer and the firmware version is 1.03. If 1.11 might cause trouble is there any advantage in upgrading? Also I presume all carefully chosen settings have to be re set after upgrading? I know one can store settings on a card and then restore them so I’m not too concerned about that. You early advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone please say what the advantages would be with QT 7.6 over 7.5.0 which I’ve only just installed with Media 100 version 13?

Rafael, I am puzzled when you suggest that it is a bad idea to master to DVCAM. Assuming that we don’t master to HD what other tape codec should we use? I edit with Media 100 in HD (1920 X 1080i), conform the edit to Motion JPEG 2, re render in that codec and make my DVD’s. I then want a tape master and have to master in DV to my DVCAM DSR 20 deck – I have no other choice do I? As a matter of interest the picture quality of these DVCAM masters when I have shot in HQ with the EX1 are superior to that which I obtained with shooting in DVCAM on the DSR 300.

Marvin, having read this thread with interest it has once again made me realise how good is the Vortex Media double DVD instructional workshop on the EX1. I have no connection with Vortex being some 3,000 miles away but their Doug Jensen does such a good job that I always advise new operators of this camera to view these discs, it’s for pros not punters and he covers file naming in great detail in order to avoid your very problem. If you’re employing cameramen give them a copy to take home and digest. I often re view it as I am reminded of some aspect of the camera that I have overlooked. It’s not just the acquisition of footage but the post process as well that is covered in illuminating detail.
Others please note because many of the questions I see posted on this forum are brilliantly answered on this workshop. I can’t understand why all the sellers of this camera don’t give the DVD’s with the camera, mine certainly did, and it was much to my advantage, and theirs, because I had no questions to subsequently plague them with!

Kellen. If I connect my EX1’s USB outlet to my Mac G5 (I have the Sony Transfer Software installed) I instantly get all the clips from the card as thumbnails and they are ready for playing. How is that “painfully slow and ridiculous”? I agree that it can be a bit longwinded when you want to take the contents of a card to an external drive pending ingest to your edit system because you have to go through a laptop.
Maybe I’ve misunderstood your query, apologies if this is so.

Oh my, may be wiser to re think the strategy of downloading S X S camera media to a stand alone drive and instead keep the media on the cheaper cards as we did for tape? Craig, what would be your favourite option? Are you absolutely confident with the performance of the non S X S cards?
