Carig said earlier that “Just like you can do with EX1, EX3 which also can use SD cards now”

Is this true. Can SD be used in the EX1? How much is the largest card and how much video will it hold? If I had known this, I might have purchased the EX1 over the Z5u.

Please read forum posts on MxR and SDHC and there are other labeled threads too.
With MxR adaptor Sandisk Ultra, Extreme, Transcend Class 6 cards work in EX1 and EX3.

    16GB cards are under $30
32GB cards are still new and around $150
    The adaptor is $35

    IMHO consider selling the Z5.
JVC is about to ship a camera that also uses XDCAM EX codec on SDHC.
HDV is a poor codec IMHO.

Always check with other professionals such as this forum before making a purchase. SDHC has been discussed here for some time. Previous to MxR people were using Kensington and Delkin adaptor. SDHC has been possible since EX1 firmware 1.11 and the EX3 has been able to use them since they started shipping.

[Mike Allen] “How much is the largest card and how much video will it hold?”

From what I’ve learned the recording times are similar to the SxS Pro cards. Shooting at the highest quality setting will give you 57 minutes on the 16’s and double that for the 32’s. Shooting at a lower quality setting will give you more recording time.

32GB cards hold 118 minutes (nearly 2 hours!).

I was about to buy an EX1, but when I read about the SDHC solution I spend the extra money (for the SxS cards) and buy the EX3 !!….

It is an incredible camera and I’m very glad to have found the adapter/SDHC card solutions !!!

Thank you so much to all the people on the forums !!!

    Kind Regards

I’m still floored by the savings too.

MxR plus Sandisk Ultra II 32GB – $185
    Sony SxS 32GB card – $1425

    MxR plus Transcend Class 6 16GB – $65
    Sony SxS 16GB card – $750

And prices are dropping on the SDHC cards too and one can often find bargains.
And you can buy more 16GB cards at your local office supply store if you need more during a shoot.
And you can sell to client if they want to leave shoot with masters.
And you can save the shoot masters rather than reuse.

Oh my, may be wiser to re think the strategy of downloading S X S camera media to a stand alone drive and instead keep the media on the cheaper cards as we did for tape? Craig, what would be your favourite option? Are you absolutely confident with the performance of the non S X S cards?
