Once you have a .img, (which can be burnt in Toast at any time), you can put in on a drive and take it off whenever you require to burn a disc. I keep mine on my MacPro hard drive for a while as they don’t use up much space but for a longer time I’d put it on an external drive.

I use BitVice on my MacPro to encode HD to SD m2v . Faster than real time with the new version on the new Mac and great quality.

Nick, doesn’t either BitVice or Purifier have a built in conversion for PAL to NTSC?

Re conforming an aspect ratio in Media 100 does inevitably involve some compromise but it can be minimised with skill and luck, depending on the original framing of each shot. You will get a window showing the frame with sliders that enable you to choose exactly how much you lose top and bottom of the frame. It can be done in a way that is hardly noticed, but, as I say, it depends to some extent on the framing.

    Why do they want 4:3?

Ben presumably the .mov file is just one single file with all the video as one timeline as we would get when exporting a programme from Media 100? Surely the only way is for you to import in the normal way in whatever codec you select and split it all up again as you intimated in your earlier post. If you’re lucky each clip (take) will have some indication of division such as a clapper, audible note or black. It’s not a working day today so your advice will be limited but I don’t see how you can split the file before import but I may be completely wrong.

Presumably you fellows all live in good old USA? Here in good old England I had a firmware update done in 40 minutes free by my vendor who deals in large quantities of Sony kit. Same a couple of years ago with the previous update.

Richard, these things are very subjective, that’s the problem. One man’s good picture might not be the next man’s good picture and without using proper testing kit it’s difficult to judge. All I can say is that I’m not by any means alone in regarding BitVice as a better encoding app than Compressor. Compressor is brilliant at producing H264 files for the web etc but for DVD’s try BitVice.

Richard, you mention some, in my experience, pretty inferior DVD production methods.

You will get a much better SD DVD (from a ProRes HQ timeline) by using the encoding software BitVice. Export your timeline as a QT .mov file and drag it to BitVice. This will also do a good quality downscale at the same time as well as preparing your ac3 audio file. I then use Studio Pro to mix it all and end up with a .img file which can then be burnt to DVD in Titanium Toast. That’s a good workflow for SD DVD’s and the quality I’m now getting is almost tape quality.

You mention Blu-Ray. For that obviously you need an HD timeline (mine is HQ ProRes) and I use the new version of Toast to encode and burn the BD disc.

Can I add my thanks to Floh for this. I thought it was my incompetence in losing the arrows. Hopefully this can be sorted for the next version which Floh has intrigued us with, I;m surprised that there have not been any other complaints on this one, surely everyone is producing text titles which need positioning within the frame?

Yes, this is EXACTLY what I am also having trouble with. I need these arrows accurately to position my text over the background scene. Floh, is there anything we can do and does Boris know?
