Hey Jim, did we realise at the time what a great camera the DSR 300 was? Pity it was not HD and only 4:3 aspect. Can’t advise on your audio problem, doubtless others will but I’m puzzled that you couldn’t se the ‘line’ setting for the incoming signal.

Not in front of my edit computer either but if, in the Export box you click on Options, you should get a list somewhere of all the possible export options, codecs and aspects. May I ask why H264 rather than ProRes HQ? I thought that ProRes may be better quality but may be wrong.

Lorcan,as has been written, you won’t go wrong using the default settings but here are some tips.
It’s always advisable to set your white balance using a white card at your location. Store the setting in selection ‘A’. If you are likely to have to move to say, another room, or go outside in a hurry, you can store the relevant balance in selection ‘B’. Personally I like to select my Kelvin value by entering the figures into various Picture Profiles which you can then select instantly by using the on screen menue. I have a range of Kelvin values from 5600 for daylight, through to 3200 for normal household lighting. I can judge a suitable figure very often from the camera screen, I find it to be very accurate. To access these settings set the White Balance switch to ‘Pre Set’. I never, ever use ATW.
Your audio question is trickier, as everyone writes, the manual is ambivalent to say the least. Personally I don’t link the AGC for both channels as if I’m using two mics I want the two tracks to be completely separate for editing. As to gain for the video I always shoot at -3 whenever possible but in emergency have gone as high as plus 9 without any problem.
If you have time I strongly advise anyone new to these great cameras to view and digest the Vortex Media DVD workshop presented by Doug Jensen. It is all there (and I mean all) with these questions and many more covered clearly and sensibly.

Noah, doesn’t Toast 11 Pro boast BD authoring facility? I do all my BD’s with it but don’t want chapters so haven’t tested this aspect. The quality looks fantastic on a big HD screen, are you saying that Encore would look even better?

Is Boris reading this forum with regard to PR for Media 100? We are all very happy continuing to edit with Media 100 but it would be nice to be joined (re joined?) by all the disenchanted FCP users.
On your title problem Robert, I’ve had no such problem but I thought Floh told us that the problem is limited to those on the new Mac OS, Lion. Are you on that version?

Jim, unless you’re pretty close to the action an on camera mic is not the way to go. Even with a good mic (and I’ve used a Rode and they are good), you really need an off camera mic for your main audio capture. At a wedding say, you could leave a radio mic as near to the speeches as possible and, in the example you give, site it near to the music source. For talking heads I always try and use an off camera mic and if the location is under my control it can be a wired one. I use the small ‘tie clip’ mics, either radio or wired and you’d be amazed at how much better you capture the voice.

That edit window does more than just trim by the way, it enables many other functions such as motion & colour FX and the opportunity to disable one or more audio tracks from a given clip.
I agree that Boris should really make an effort to take advantage of the FCP hiatus, maybe WE should post to the FCP forums? Anyone from Boris/Media 100 reading this?

Don, is there any reason why I shouldn’t stick with the existing version of EX Transfer as I don’t need Lion. I only use Transfer to access my BPAV folders and import sections of selected clips. Does the job, why change? Wht’s the advantage of all these updates?

Yes Jim, I think I read somewhere (here?) that this is possible but we’ll have to wait for a working day, tomorrow, for the geniuses to help.

Jim, how many hours do you need? I’ve managed surprisingly easily on 2x16gb SxS cards with a spare 8gb. I shoot a lot of footage in documentary making but usually have an opportunity to download either back at base or on location. On a shoot all I need is a MacBook, the EX USB lead and a small USB powered drive. Sure the SxS are crazily expensive but we can’t treat them like tape. File downloads and file storage is difficult to get used to but that’s the way today.
