In the color FX I’m certain there is a Black & White setting in the ‘Classic’ window. There used to be anyway, I haven’t checked my latest version.

Please, can either Jim, Craig or Don answer these simple questions on that new camera, I not a techy.
1. Is the chip smaller, larger or the same as the EX 1?
2. Is the tele focal length of the lens shorter, the same or longer than the EX 1?
3. Is the low light performance of the new camera worse, better or the same as with the EX 1?
4. Finally, is the definition of the screen worse, better or the same as on the EX 1?I know there might be other differences, such as menus, PP settings etc but my main concerns would be with the four questions, thanking you all for any light (low or high!) that you can shed.

Ian, any comment on the talk (see above) concerning an update for the EX cameras (all) enabling 50mps acquisition? Possible? Likely?

Jay it might help if you gave some indication where you are in the world, it is quite a big place, even though it may not appear so to other galaxies. I’m always amazed that Americans (I suspect that is where you are) consider their continent to be the centre of the universe.
As Eric indicates, compression applications vary tremendously and terms such as ‘high end’ mean little. Why don’t you download software such as BitVice (they may currently have an offer of some sort) and do some tests yourself. You can then experiment with bit rates and one or two pass runs. You may well find that you can do as good a job as anyone else.

I too don’t know the 500 but can say that downloading BPAV files from a full S X S 16 GB card from my EX 1 takes about 13 minutes. I hook up USB to my MacBook and take the files straight through the computer to a drive connected to the MacBook by firewire 800. 64 GB’s then would take about one hour, not three.

I think that it’s just that the complete file on a card is inviolate, you can’t interfere with it in any way, and you’d be unwise to try. Once the media is actually in your edit system as media, then of course you have complete control over it. If you don’t want a clip then obviously you won’t import it, but it can’t be deleted (I think), other than from within the camera as you suggest.

Scott, I know you’re short of time for this project but for future use you may wish to try a better encoder than Compressor as Bill suggests. I use BitVice, with the two pass VBR. The latest versions of this software really are very good and, as a bonus, the quality of the downscale from HD to SD for the DVD is first rate.
