I’m also a confirmed long standing fan of Media 100 and have digitized many of my VHS analogue tapes into my Media 100 system. What I do is to transfer the VHS on to DV tape, (I’m a film maker so have DV decks), then take the media into Media 100 in the usual way. No need for FCP at all, thank goodness!

Eric, I use software on my Mac called Print CD. It’s brilliant, I can produce really good looking artwork in minutes, complete with the DVD or Blu-Ray motive and a still from the film. I then print Verbatim Printable DVD-R discs in my Epson Stylus Photo P50 printer. The results look good. It does take a bit of time to print each disc (about two minutes) so 80 would take time but the only expense is the printing ink. The disc surface is a matt white by the way.

Martin, good to hear that but you may not realise that you are very near the Sony experts at Top-Teks, they’re in Harefield and they do my EX updates.

Steve, first of all you need a wider aperture and you’ll get it a bit wider if you set your gain to -3. Most EX users shoot with -3 gain if there is enough light to do so. I’m not an expert on PP’s but I do know that some Knee settings try and compensate for over exposure and try and compress the video. I’d set your Profile to factory default, but don’t go fully automatic whatever you do. Use the maximum ND, even fit an additional one if you can because you need to be nearer f5.6 0r f4 if possible. These cameras give fantastic pictures most of the time, you shouldn’t be having problems.

I only know the ex camera but presumably there are options to create Picture Profiles with both cameras. Experimenting with all the various settings, particularly with saturation should enable you to narrow the difference.
Have a look at Alister Chapman’s web site, ( https://www.ingenioustv.com), he’s the PP expert with Sony cameras. I attended one of his workshops two weeks ago on this very subject.

Cannot believe you guys. You spend six grand on cameras, tripods, mics etc etc yet try to save a little on cards, the one item that in the event of failure makes all the rest of the stuff useless. You’re lucky, once you have good cards (Sony S X S) they can be used time and time again with no worries. In the old days we had 16mm film rattling through the camera, costing hundreds and used just the once!

There is a huge difference if you want your stuff on the BBC here in the UK. They will only take 50mbps material, as will many other broadcasters now. Of course you don’t need to tell them what rate you shot at but there you go.
Attended a Master Class yesterday by Alister Chapman at Top-Teks, on the PMW 200, pretty impressive, especially the refinements in the Picture Profile menu that we don’t have with the EX 1.

Floh, that’s odd, I have version 2.1 and was looking for the ‘conform’ window and couldn’t find it! Does that mean that we can’t choose whether to crop top or sides (or a combination of both as before), we just have to let Media 100 do the re size?

I’ve delivered to broadcasters in two ways. In SD they wanted a DVCAM tape (SD of course) and the broadcast looked great, another wanted a file and I gave them the file in the Apple ProRes HQ codec (HD). Presumably you can export from FCP (I use Media 100) as a ProRes file so why not offer them that? If it has to be SD the downscale is critical. Don’t use the EX camera’s downscale, it is not good enough. Either do it with AJA hardware or, if it is good enough, use FCP. I don’t know how good it is with Compressor but I suspect not all that good. You are always better off shooting in HD and then going from there, the higher re acquisition the better.

Well Marcus, it would seem that the 16:9 footage has not been properly configured for your 4:3 timeline hence the ‘stretched’ images. There is a re configuring aspect box somewhere and you should be able to do this, did you not get a message to this effect when you placed the footage in the timeline? Differing aspects and codecs can be confusing but you can generally work yourself to the right answer eventually. Floh may read this at some point and come to your rescue!
