There probably wouldn’t be a great difference although I find that the later versions of BitVice (great encoding software) have, not only done the job much faster, but give an even better quality picture. The lasting times of DVD’s vary considerably, depending on how they are kept. Sunlight is not a good idea! I was once told that we shouldn’t depend on a burnt DVD lasting much more than five years, as opposed to the commercially pressed discs. Something to do with the dyes used in the disc.

Thanks Ian, but you said it, Transfer is a “dedicated import plug in”, that’s my point, that’s what many, many EX users really want. ContentBrowser is a monster. Great cameras, lousy customer consideration.

Ian, as a few of us have stated, we don’t like ContentBrowser and, as all we need to do is import XDCAM material, we still use and prefer Transfer. Browser is unnecessarily complicated and for importing, Transfer is so much easier and quicker.
When future OS updates make it impossible to use the Transfer system that we currently use, can Sony at least provide simple, designated Transfer software?

Fellows, I’m puzzled. Why should we consider ‘migrating’ to another editing system? There’s no way whatsoever that I’ll consider doing that. Media 100 works perfectly, does all I need in editing my documentaries and Boris has confirmed that he’ll keep it working with future OS updates. What are all these magical ‘new features’ deemed so essential? I started editing film and appreciate how similar the process is using Media 100. There have been substantial advances with the ability to lay media in the various graphics tracks and we have a complete audio mixing studio at our fingertips. Are people making such fabulous programmes with all the other systems that we have to use their kit?
I’m sure I’m going to be labelled an ‘old fogey’, so be it, as I say I’m puzzled.

Well, the EX3 is very similar in performance to the EX 1, it does however allow a change of lens which may or may not be helpful. I find that it is heavier so not as easy to use on a busy location. The shaded and magnified screen is a huge benefit, the EX 1 is tricky to focus in bright light.
The PMW 200 is an interesting variant to the EX 1 but the only real improvement in my opinion is the ability to shoot at 50mbps which is now a requirement for many broadcasters. The EX cameras shoot at 35 (VBR). All these cameras, properly used, can give wonderful quality pictures with every aid in the menus that you could possibly want – well done Sony.

The real expert over here in Europe as regards PP’s for Sony cameras is Alister Chapman. His company is Ingenious TV and he posts many tutorials which can probably be accessed through his web site.

Thank you Don, just read your admirable note on ProRes.
Can I just ask whether you think that it is safe to archive finished productions in this codec? I edit all my stuff in ProRes 422 HQ and it looks great when transcribed to DVD and even better on BD. I then archive in a ProRes QT .mov file to a G Safe Drive. I have heard it said that Apple will eventually abandon the codec and it will be unplayable on future kit. Is this likely? Surely it should always be recoverable for use?

I’m a great fan of Transfer, Content Browser seems ridiculously over specced. However, I too had problems when I went to Mountain Lion but can manage now I’ve worked out slight differences in my operating it. Let us hope that it continues to work.
Greg, in the field I merely download my S X S cards into a portable USB powered drive, through a MacBook Pro. Laptop. Don’t need Transfer for that. I just drag and drop, then back up onto a bigger drive back at base. I know I’m taking a chance without a checking process, I merely check if all the clip numbers have gone over OK. Ian, please please can we keep a simple Transfer application rather than this wretched Browser.
