For what it’s worth (and Eric will probably rubbish me), I export my ProRes 1920 X 1080i timeline from my edit as a QT ProRes 422 .mov and just drag that .mov file into Titanium Toast Pro 11. That then does all the encoding (takes a while) and then it burns my BD. For this I connect a stand alone BD burner to my MacPro. I get absolutely brilliant BD’s, the best I’ve seen, no idea how or why but that’s what happens!

Rudolf, not all that time consuming, what is your workflow after the BitVice encode? Of course, if you’ve shot in HD there is the downscale, which BitVice takes some time doing, but after that it’s minutes, or at least should be. Do you need menus and all that? I don’t, so that simplifies things.

I wouldn’t go that far, you will probably be losing really valuable data for running the camera, Ian will doubtless confirm. I’d stick to re sets in the event of more trouble but why anticipate, these cameras are pretty solid performers and your problem was a one off, and you don’t know what your friend did to invite that problem.

I’m not Ian Cook (he’ll be glad to know!) but I think I can answer your questions.
You would have been stuffed had you not kept your camera settings. I would have thought that yes, certainly, you would lose the settings from the card had you formatted. Yes, you can keep the settings on other drives than the S X S cards, I keep mine on a memory stick.
I never format cards other than when used in a camera for the first time. I merely delete clips to clear a card for re use.

Rudolf, sorry I didn’t know you were waiting for me! I now feel responsible but I assure you that I have no financial interest in BitVice.
Now, as to settings. they do depend to some extent on the size of the file but yours sounds OK. I set the average rate to about 7.5, the minimum at 4.5 and the upper limit at 8.25. Yes, I usually set the 2.2 gamma since that tends to prevent to dark an image for TV, but it does depend on what your export settings to ProRes were. If you have the choice try and set the colour space setting to Computer 0 – 255. I’m editing in Media 100 which treats colour space differently from some other systems. I don’t know FCP. Back to BitVice. Make sure the single pass box is not checked, you want a double pass encode. I usually have Purifier on 1 but if you have decent clean footage it’s not essential. I’ve never used Intra DC so can’t comment.
I’m exporting to ProRes footage that I shoot in 1920 X 1080i 25fps, and BitVice does a brilliant downscale for DVD’s. The artifacts that you see sound normal for brickwork (especially if the camera moves) but you shouldn’t be getting pixelation. What are you then doing with the m2v and ac3 files? I put them into Studio Pro 4 and burn the resultant .img in Titanium Toast Pro 11.

Glad you sorted it, BitVice is the real deal for encoding DVD’s, the quality on the latest version is brilliant, especially if the footage was shot in HD, the BitVice downscale is very good.
Roger Andersson is very laid back, not always easy to find but when you do he’s delightful. I just hope that he keeps this software going because it’s awesome.

Ian, I’m afraid that we’re still talking at cross purposes. I know that Transfer is only converting to QT .mov, Media 100 is indeed doing the importing and conversion to my chosen codec, ProRes. When you say that with Browser, all I need to do is click on selected clips prior to import (why Final Cut?), that is not only what I want. I need to select in and out points for each clip, easily and quickly. Not clear and straightforward in the new ContentBrowser. Fortunately Transfer is working for me and I plan to stay with it.

Ian, you misunderstand my enquiry. It is I who would like to see a Tutorial since I had the greatest difficulty in actioning the simple task of viewing EX clips, then selecting sections of individual clips for import as ProRes into Media 100. With Transfer this is easy, the BPAV clips are converted to .mov and Media 100 imports as ProRes. I’m sure, as you say, this is possible in ContentBrowser, but it seems a darn sight more complicated.

Daniel, Sony have been very stubborn in insisting on dropping the wonderfully simple Transfer. It did exactly that, easily and swiftly transferred files in a BPAV folder to the drives and edit system of your choice. By the way, I’m still using Transfer with the same OS as you, it does work with a few minor work arounds. Long may it last.
Ian, is there a simple Tutorial available from Sony that explains, in Peter and Jane language, how to just do what we did in Transfer but using your ContentBrowser (if we must).
