Here’s a question for those familiar with FCP, Avid, and Sony’s XDCAM HD422 codec.

I have a load of footage (over 3000 shots) captured using FCP and used for regular edits for a long term client. The majority of the footage is SD (PAL) in ProRes 422 codec. However, there is some newer HD footage in XDCAM HD422 1080i.

I’ve been asked to provide the footage to an Avid based facility. And so begins my dilemma:

Obviously, making dubs of all the original rushes will take too long, and is not very cost effective for anyone involved.

The simplest method would be to copy the drive and send them my pre-captured files. As far as I understand, their Windows based Avid will be able to accept my ProRes files, but there is currently no QuickTime XDCAM codec for Windows. So, my options are:

1 – convert the XDCAM HD422 .movs to ProRes 422. (will this work?)

2 – backup the original XDCAM discs to the drive and let them sort it themselves.

Any advice or alternative options would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Get them the camera original files. For them to try to deal with anything you already imported into FCP might be not worth it. IF you want to send them ProRes, they will need the ProRes Decoder…

Native XDCAM they will not see at all. But if you give them the originals, they can then immediately convert those to the Avid format and not have to deal with the FCP codecs at all.

Ah, but there is. Your client needs to buy (or you need to provide them with) the Calibrated Q XDDecode quicktime component for Windows. That, together with Apple’s ProRes Decode component for Windows should let the Avid work with any of these pre-imported quicktime movie files

    Ah…I keep forgetting about that.

OK…if they want to spend MONEY…that is the way to go. If they want pain free, and cost free, then get them the camera originals.

OK – great. Calibrated XD Decoder is an option – the cost is quite minimal if I take into account how long the XDCAM discs will take to back up from scratch (there are over 20 discs).

    Thanks for you help!
