Well I am going to shoot my independent short film very soon on SONY PMW EX3 – 24p1080/24p720. I have Avid Media Composer installed(software only). Now due to budget constraints I wish to edit the film on proxy files and then transfer the whole project to another system with Avid support device such as Nitrix or Mojo for the purpose of rendering.

So is this work flow possible from on system to another for only purpose of rendering. If yes then please provide the details on how this work flow can be achieved.

Thanks to all. Help will be appreciated.

Budget constraints? For STORAGE? Do you know you can get a 2TB firewire drive for $400? And that will hold 110 hours of EXCAM EX at full resolution! 4TB for $800 for 220 hours! So why bother with the PRICEY online time to recapture/conform from offline to online, and take the money saved for just ONE HOUR of that (OK, maybe two hours), and get a bigger hard drive?

Well you are right the cost is not much if its storage that matters. Now I don’t have a Blackmagic or an Arora with me, neither do I have a very powerful processor and getting all this means spending a lot which I don’t have. I am a film student just got out of the institute and wish to make a short film.

So I thought of editing proxies and just exporting the project on better system to prevent all the above written charges as I’ll be spending some amount on lights, camera and grips too.

Help still needed. Question is still out there.

[Shashank Walia] “s. Now I don’t have a Blackmagic or an Arora with me”

Nor do you need one. Those are for another editing system. Avid hardware is MOJO, NITRIS, ADRENALINE, and more recently, for viewing only, Matrox MXO2 Mini. You are working tapeless…no additional hardware is needed. just a computer, storage drive, and the Avid MC software.

You might not need it. What computer do you have?

If you edit full res, then the only money you will really spend is on the hard drives. If, however, you edit proxies, and then online, you will spend far MORE money during the online process conforming the footage to full resolution. Might only take a few hours, but at online rates that can work out to be a couple thousand dollars. Unless you know someone who is doing this for free.

I have DELL STUDIO 15 wit INTEL CORE 2DUO 2.03 GHZ, 4GB RAM, 250 GB SATA 7200 RPM, 512MB VIDEO MEMORY ATI RADEON and that’s about it.

Is it possible to edit in full resolution 24fps720p footage or even render it.

Well if you say so I’ll take the game. But I am still unsure that without any acceleration card such as MATROX RTX2 Series, my laptop will handle 720progressive 24fps video.

    Thanks for the help.

Well, first off, that Matrox card doesn’t work with Avid…only the MXO2 mini, and only for monitoring. No acceleration. Second, 720p 23.98 is the EASIEST HD format to deal with. VERY light on the system.
