Workflow FCP Adpobe Premiere Pro
Posted by Martial Bachoffner on June 6, 2008 at 8:42 pmHello,
I’m helping with a non-profit TV station.
I would like to know what is the best workflow to work from FCP to Premiere Pro CS3.
I suggested to work in 720×486 who standard for broadcast, they work in 720×480.
Also, there a satellite broadcast. I think that the format for that is mpeg2.
People want to edit in mpeg2. I guess it’s not a good idea.
They also want to go HD with HDV, again I think HDV is not accurate.
As far I know to broadcast HD the codec is H.264 and not mpeg2.Thanks to clarify.

[Martial Bachoffner] ” I think HDV is not accurate. “
No really. You work with a TC. To edit in MPG-2 used to be impossible no long ago. Editing applications and graphic platforms (QT) were not ready to manage it. This have really changed.
I’m working with EX-1 (MPG2) and you can edit at easy as DV. You just need a system with a bit more of performance.

June 7, 2008 at 7:03 amYou mean you convert the mpeg2 as DV?
Because when you work with mpeg2 on your timeline, you loose quality each time you play it back.
You NLE has to decode and encode each time.I don’t think that HDV is appropriate for broadcast HD.
Here in Canada, CBC ask for a 4:4:4 file. HDV is only 4:2:0.Regards,

June 7, 2008 at 9:07 amHi Martial,
GOP based codecs are always more difficult to manage that Intraframe.
This have nothing to do with any loose of quality. You can shoot HDV, edit HDV and print back to tape HDV without loosing a bit of your original shoot.
I don’t now in Canada, but in the rest of the world the main part of the pro work is done in 422.
HDV is in the lower scale of the MPG@ based formats, but today you can record MPG2 100Mbps, Intraframe,422.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

June 8, 2008 at 1:22 amThanks Rafael,
I heard from other editors that when you edit HDV on your timeline, you loose quality each time you plaback. This is why when you capture you change the codec and you don’t edit natively in HDV.

June 8, 2008 at 3:20 amNot really Martial. As I said GOPs are always a bit more difficult to manage because logically managing individual images is easyer. But things have changed. Just a couple of years ago if you tried to open an MPG2 with QT you got the beach ball spinning for 2 or 3 minutes before the movie could be opened.
I was very reluctant to the MPG-2, now I work with an EX-1 and I’m really happy. No difference than working with DV and the quality is amazing.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

June 9, 2008 at 5:06 amYes. MPG-2 is great because is fully scalable. It will allows the quality that you want.
Until now nor the software neither the hardware has been ready to manage it. But things have really changed. You can go from camera to Bluray all the way in MPG-2. With your HDV you can get very good image working well in shooting and Post.
BTW, H264 is a format only for delivery. You better don’t bring H264 footage to FC, because the application start to do funny things.
