April 21, 2009 at 12:55 pm[eric pautsch] “Im been calling it and will continue to call it!! Apple will NOT be releasing a Blu Ray authoring package anytime in the near future – if at all. “
And if they do, people like you and me who have been producing BluRay discs for over 18 months will have that much of a head start. I have never understood why people wait for Apple to do everything for them.
“I have to have this now, I don’t know why Apple is making me wait, I’m gonna hold my breath until they satisfy me!”
As a professional serving the needs of my clients, I rely on a whole slew of manufacturers because it’s my job to deliver what the client is asking for. Not what I can deliver because I’m waiting on a certain manufacturer to give me the tools I’m asking for. I can never EVER imagine saying to a client, “Well I’d really like to do that job for you but you know what, Apple hasn’t released a product that can accomodate that request so I can’t do the job for you.”
Here’s what I’ll say about BluRay. To date I have invested about $5,000 in the software and hardware to author BluRay discs. My profit has been WELL above that initial investment. Apple has not been a part of any of those BluRay discs except for those that were created as “Play Only” via Encore.
Will it be nice if Apple ever rolls BluRay in DVDSP? Sure, I’ll use it for “Play Only” discs like I do with Encore now. Do I care if Apple ever released BluRay support? Nope. It doesn’t affect my company either way.
So the question is not “Will Apple Step Up To the Plate.” The question is “will you step up to the plate to serve your clients?”

I have to ask, Walter. How can you get Encore to work? Every time I’ve tried to use it for Blu-Ray creation, it crashes on building the disc every time. If it weren’t for your tip on using BD-RW, I would have created a bunch of expensive drink coasters.
For my one-offs, I’ve found that Roxio’s Toast works very well and faster than Encore and Compressor combined.

With Encore CS3 we would build BluRay Image files and then use Toast to burn the ISO files to BD-R’s.
With Encore CS4 the build BluRay Disc seems to be working on the 2 we’ve done so far.

April 21, 2009 at 1:58 pm[Mike Schrengohst] “If they don’t then I will send the clients to you.”
We’ll gladly help them out. I’ve gotten so many referrals from folks who know we have the BD capabilities in our shop it’s become a fairly large part of my business. Most folks only want 1 to 20 BD’s so they don’t want to commercially replicate them.

April 21, 2009 at 3:00 pmOk… I gotcha ya.
I have noticed that Encore CS3 seems to crash every time on the burn. So let me ask you this?
Do you think that Encore’s compression is better than Toast’s compression technique?

We don’t allow Toast or Encore to compress any files.

April 21, 2009 at 8:09 pmThere is a new Microsoft TV commercial that depicts a mom & son shopping for a laptop at a Best Buy Store. They pass over the Apple machines and start checking out the features on a Sony Vaio. Both exclaim, “Oh, Blu-Ray!”
Perhaps this will cause Apple to wake-up. -

April 21, 2009 at 9:25 pmThat’s cool….
But there is a reason for this. Sony did help develop and implement the Blu-Ray format first. Remember, XDCAM came available in 2004 (I think). XDCAM is a form of Blu-Ray. So…. Yeah, they are really going to push it hard.
