In the old days, if I did a RAM preview it might take a long time to render the frames, but once they were rendered it played back in real time.

Now, no matter how powerful my computer is, RAM preview is just crummy. Sometimes it starts playing well, then goes slo-mo, then speeds up, then goes slo-mo again. This is true of all the computers I use, Windows, Mac, all of varying power.

I can’t remember what AE version this began with.

A few years ago, there was a time of “multiprocessor” rendering that you could turn on and off, plus a background rendering thing that would cache frames while you worked, etc. Those seemed to have issues, but I don’t remember playback ever being so terrible.

Is this a known issue or is there some setting I’m unaware of?

Great point… projects are bigger and more complex for sure. But my computer is also 10x as powerful.

But even without video footage, and it’s just mograph, playback is bad.

I’m caching to nice SSD as well. Doesn’t make sense to me, especially when it slows down and speeds up as it plays back the ram preview.

Again… happening on all computers with different configurations.
