December 5, 2007 at 7:32 pmJust my two cents here, it may not have anything to do with this problem, but I was seeing the exact same thing happen in Compressor when I took 1440×1080 HDV clips and made them 1920×1080 square pixel ProResHQ files. The same thing would happen if I took an HDV clip and dropped it into a 1920×1080 ProRes timeline in FCP 6.0.1 and rendered. I would say it has to be the fact that HDV and DVCPRO HD are non-square animorphic formats, as others above have stated. So it may not just be a still image export problem, more of a FCP/Quicktime conversion from an animorphic HD format to a non-animorphic HD format. But please prove me wrong, as I can’t prove that this is the problem, it’s just an educated guess.

My next question is, what can I do about it? Or, do I just have to wait for Apple to fix it?

Before compressor was around it was the only way to change your format during render. The workflow of using QT conversion to extract stills is poor for quality. It doesn’t matter if only now it seems to worsen your quality but FCP 6 has changed the structure for rendering. This is not a bug. It’s just one of those “proper sequence of procedure” type deals.

December 6, 2007 at 2:24 amThat’s the matter. Before when exporting a still was not pixels managing. Each video pixel was converted in a still pixel. Now everything is converted to square pixels. But is not just an QT issue, FC do the same.

a quick fix to the problem: don’t let FC do any scaling! Export the movie from FC “as is” eg. the straight “Export Quicktime movie”, Current settings way. Import the movie in Adobe AfterFX and make a composition from the mov, using all it’s settings (PAR etc) If you’re exporting to a square pixel format, change the Comp settings to requested output size (via Presets f.i) and export your image sequence from there. You may need to scale your movie down first to f.e. 80% if the output is PAL 16:9.
If you want to keep your 960:720 HD PAR format just export straight away.
I don’t know why FC messes up the image, i guess it’s a codec thing?
The AfterFX route works for me, any size & PAR, have not tryed this with interlaced footage yet however. Observe and interpret the correct field order and things usually work out though…hope it’s of any help!
