  • Why does this image look so bad…

Posted by Chris Messineo on December 4, 2007 at 7:28 pm

I have exported hundreds of still images from my films using:

File – Export – Using QuickTime Conversion and selecting Still Image

This always worked great, until I upgraded from 6.0 to 6.02

Now, no matter what I do, the image comes out blotchy.

Here is how the image looks in FCP: https://www.OffStageFilms.com/images/ITD-Good.jpg

Here is how it looks after I export: https://www.OffStageFilms.com/images/ITD-Good.jpg

I have tried this with different clips, colors, projects, and they all come out blotchy (even images I exported without a problem in the past). It doesn’t matter if I select JPG, PNG, or Tiff, they all look bad.

Does anyone have any idea what might of changed in 6.02? Is there a better way to export images?

    Chris

Both of those links are to the same image.

    Dave,

First thanks, I should have put “bad” instead of good in the second link.

Second, No, I made no other changes.

It’s very strange. As soon as I select quicktime conversion I can see the image in my canvas gets all pixelated, even before the export happens. As soon as that menu goes away the image in the canvas returns to normal.

    Very strange and frustrating.

Maybe try trashing your render files for the project?

This looks like compression to me.

    What codec is your sequence?

The problem is the file isn’t rendered. In earlier versions images would make the render indicator go green, and you could render it. Now it doesn’t render until output, but that’s not happening on still image export. You’ll see the render indicator goes red in the timeline when you start the export. Try this. Apply a non-real-time filter like defocus and set the amount in the filter down to zero. Render the file and see what the output is like. I don’t know if this works for your material, but try it.

    All the best,

    Tom

[Tom Wolsky] “The problem is the file isn’t rendered.”

Tom is pretty much on the mark. The reason these look bad is you’re exporting a single field rather than a frame.

That’s why I said to trash the render files. I’ve seen a number of times FCP gets a phantom render file where it thinks something is rendered but it really isn’t.

Yes, I have the latest version of quicktime.

Sorry to be dense, but how do I do that?

This Sequence is DVCPRO HD 720p60.

However I have opened other projects (some that are 4 years old) and they all get blotchy when I try to export a still.

It’s very odd. As soon as I select quicktime conversion from the menu, the canvas gets blotchy. Even before I start the export. If I hit cancel the menu goes away and the canvas returns to normal.

I can’t even imagine what would cause this.
