What’s up with filler not being being black?
Just did an edit that I colored inside MC6 with Magic Bullet looks, and I just realized that the black filler isn’t actually black. I crushed the blacks on a few clips that cut to black filler and there’s a noticeable color shift. My guess this was from the days of everything ending up being broadcast and you had to worry about safe levels, but come on it’s the age of internet video where black really can be black. There’s really no way to set filler level to pure black? Really? Am I wrong about this? Anyway, sorry for the rant, but it seems silly to have to add a black graphic or video footage if I want pure black…

Yeah, and can you believe cameras still have an iris? Ridiculous.
Job posted a good article about video levels and how Avid handles them. You may want to create a black image, save it to your desktop and then import it (with super black levels) for each project.

The black is still black, it just doesn’t look like that on your computer screen, a properly calibrated external monitor should display the right contrast, and if its output for web, export as RGB.

Thanks Neil, I appreciate your help. So much video I edit ends up on the web now, where broadcast safe levels don’t need to be followed 99% of the time, so I need it to look correct on the computer screen and not necessarily a broadcast monitor.

I hear you man, but in that case, just export as RGB like i said, and all your “grayish” blacks should indeed be black. Export, check it out in quicktime, or upload a small clip to vimeo to test.

Hey Neil, one more question, is there any way to view RGB levels instead of 709 within Avid while I’m editing? I tried changing my project settings to RGB and it didn’t seem to have any effect. Thanks.
