Activity Forums VEGAS Pro What are the best export settings for Youtube and Vimeo?

[John Sieber] “I’ve been using the Sony AVC render, with the internet 1080p template – it’s default bitrate is 16Mbps… Are you saying that is the max bitrate, but Vegas will encode at a variable rate?”

No, I’m saying that it seems like 16Mbps is the average bitrate, although it may also be the max. Since it’s not documented by Sony, this is just a guess from the observations I did which seem to indicate that they Sony AVC is using the specified bit-rate as an average.

[John Sieber] “I’ve been using this setting and have what seem like overly huge resultant files. With the intent of upload to youtube/vimeo, is that setting overkill? “

Yes, it’s overkill. I have seen tests that indicate that YouTube encodes 720p at 4Mbps and 1080p at 8Mbps so 16 is twice the highest bitrate that YouTube will give you back and is definitely overkill.

[John Sieber] “And for archiving – would that default rate be a good choice to archive the work?”

I would archive at the bitrate of the source. So if you are working with AVCHD 16Mbps video I would archive to AVCHD at 16Mbps.

Thanks John. I couldn’t find those specs for Youtube, so that is very helpful to know. I do intend to upload 1080p video, and the source video is from a Canon XA-10 mostly (capable of 24Mbps AVCHD), so I would think the minimum I should render at would be 8Mbps, thinking that Youtube’s engine will grind away some quality anyway… maybe the 16Mbps setting isn’t such a bad option after all?

Has anyone out there exhaustively tested this to see if Youtube (and Vimeo for that matter) do better with source material encoded at bit rates above those numbers (8Mbps) or is there no perceivable difference?

    Thanks again for your insight!

I am using Vegas Pro 12. I would like to upload Videos to Vimeo and Youtube. I am not sure I understand the information on the precious posts.

The final version of the movie is ready to be rendered. Taking into consideration render times, and file sizes, what render templates should I be using to get a good quality file that is ready to upload.

In the RENDER AS menu, I am using MainConcept AVC/AAC There are many Choices. When I select the INTERNET HD 1080P setting, the render time is approximately 5 times the duration of my movie.

Am I doing something wrong or using a setting that is too high for my needs.

When I try to use the option: “Upload to Youtube”, the movie renders very quickly, looks good, and the file size is relatively small.

Which Template should I use and do i need to customize the settings.

Also, how do I get around the YouTube 15 minute duration limit

More than likely it just means that you computer is not powerful enough for what you are asking it to do. Render times for AVC that are 3x to 5x are common for moderately performing computers. The 1080p does have a ridiculously high bitrate for YouTube video so you could probably half it.

I’ve never used that option but if you like the output then I would go with it.

[Gabriel Solomon] “Which Template should I use and do i need to customize the settings.”

I use the 720p setting. Anywhere between 4Mbps and 6Mbps should be plenty of bit rate.

    Follow the instructions on YouTube.

For reasons known only to them, Sony changed things in Pro 11 so that’s where those presets now reside.

Yes, I just upgraded to 12 from 10 and noticed the Sony AVC “Internet” templates were missing as well… I can’t seem to find a way to alter any of the Sony AVC templates to output a 1080p mp4 as before… the templates seem to all be locked as interlaced… any thoughts? Do I need to use the Main Concept templates instead now?

[John Sieber] “Do I need to use the Main Concept templates instead now?”

Yes you do. For whatever reason, Sony moved the “internet” templates.

Yes. Vegas Pro 12. 0 has an updated MainConcept AVC encoder that is really fast using the GPU and all of the “Internet” templates have been moved under that encoder and enabled for streaming. You should use the MainConcept AVC encoder for Internet (MP4/H.264) delivery now.
