Is it okay to go below Histogram 0 or above 100 by just a little bit? the measurements go from -20 and 120 and It seems the video just looks better when it’s closer to those. (I’ve heard breaking zero or 100 is a no no is why I ask…

[Derek Charles] “Is it okay to go below Histogram 0 or above 100 by just a little bit?”

Hi Derek! You’ve asked THE question that pursues all Editors since the time of Chaplin and before.

Go too high and there won’t be any pixels to adjust, they’re blown.

Go too low and there won’t be any pixels to adjust, they’re dead.

Now, to your “observations” that it looks better – really? Where are you Previewing/viewing your output?

BTW, do you use the Scopes?

    Great question.

Thank you, I understand the information loss if too high or low, clipping…
Actually now that I look, it was set to waveform, not the histogram…
So now it actually looks like I still had more room to go down to the “zero” I was thinking of… but now it says the waveform is clipping highlights, but the histogram is not past 255 in clipping…Should I be as close to zero unless I want shadow detail…I’m sure that’s all it is for that “contrast” preference…
