I am actually a Final Cut user, but I’m posting here, because I have an upcoming project where I’m going to need to incorporate an HDV segment that will be edited in Vegas. Can my Vegas editor give me a self-contained HDV file that I can use in FCP? He doesn’t seem to know whether Vegas can even output a self-contained file. He always just goes directly to DVD.

Due to issues with PC/Mac/QuickTime color/gamma shifting, the current recommendation is to the the Avid NDxHD codec on both sides. This is a free QuickTime codec from Avid that should make both of your lives easier and the colors/gamma will not shift.

Another option is to render Sony XDCAM 422 MXF files from Vegas Pro and for you to get the free Sony XDCAM MXF import utility for FCP. That should work as well. We deliver XDCAM MXF files to a post house that uses FCP to create HDCAM tapes for broadcast and it seems to work well for us.

I would try both and see which is the better workflow for you.

Thanks John. Since we both work with XDCAM-EX camera files all the time, this sounds like the best common solution. So, he can render out an XDCAM MXF file of the edited program? Can you tell me how to do this, so I can pass it along to him? He is pretty clueless in this regard.

Sure. Have him use the menu option File | Render As… and select Sony MXF as the “save as type” and then HD422 1920×1080-60i 50 Mbps as the template. (if you are in PAL land select “HD422 1920×1080-50i 50 Mbps” instead). Finally give it a meaningful filename and press Save to render. That’s all there is to it.
