    HELP

I still cannot get Sony Vegas Pro 8 to open.

    What I have done:
~ turned off DEP for Vegas
~ uninstalled Corel DVD Copy & entire Corel suite
    ~ reinstalled Sony Vegas
~ tried to open without being connected to the Internet

    Any other ideas?

~ and, I can’t do a restore point since I don’t have one prior to removing Corel
~ Sony techs have e-mailed me 3 times having me try what I have already done above…still no luck

Boy…You have one major problem…but dont give up on vegas just yet.
First, Iam certain its something simple on your system thats
causing conflict with the vegas architecture and its audio engine.

Hence, just patiently tell me all the major applications you have installed on your system. Then most importantly clean up your registry,
and your system.Use this free cleaner..https://www.ccleaner.com/ to clean up your system in the meantime.

Also, what antivirus software are you using and do you have a firewall? I had Kerio Firewall at one time and it really messed with my Vegas. Now I use AVG’s Internet security suite and never had a problem with AVG, even since AVG’s free days.

Thats a very good suggestion Allen.
Cindy, if you are using a anti-virus (lets know which)…Hence, disable
your internet connection for a while, while you disable your antivirus and firewall, then launch vegas.
Indeed AVG is good and i also would recommend Mcafee which i have used
for years to date with no complications.

Hi have Norton…yes, I have turned it off and tried to launch Vegas and still did not work.

Sony just had me uninstall again, delete the sony folder, create a new user and install under the new user…that failed also.

Primary software programs I’m using: Adobe CS3 products, Ulead, Roxio, I-tunes

    Hi
Sorry but you do have a problem and using Norton you have an even bigger problem. I personally think you’re gong to have to uninstall Norton completely. Usually this may mean a manual uninstall because Norton is not only a system hog but it puts gargage everywhere on your machine. but try the uninstaller first.

My suggestion? Uninstall Norton. Do you have a registry cleaner? Use it. I use PC tools Registry Mechanic. Then bring up my computer, right click on your C drive, click properties and click disk cleanup. Let it do it’s thing. Make sure you click okay to delete the files. Then when it’s done restart your computer. Then my computer – right click on C drive again. On the upper tabs you’ll see Tools. Click that and then defrag. That is unless you use a 3rd party defragger. I use Perfect Disk. Now all this assumes you don’t use Vista. If you use Vista someone elst will have to help you because I don’t know Vista. It may be the same as I’m suggesting here. If this is the first time you’re defragging, be prepared for an all night affair. Just walk away and go watch TV. ha ha It may take a long time.

Now after all that if you feel you still want an anti virus right away, Google AVG Free Antivirus and get the freebie for now. Then engage your windows firewall for now. Then re-install Vegas.

I’m praying you’re not going to have to re-format your hard drive but if this doesn’t help, hmmmmm I don’t know.

    Good Luck

nortons have an uninstaller (cleaner) on their site. you really need to use this to guarantee getting rid of all nortons crap.

it might not solve your problem, but i’ll bet it’ll go along way towards sorting it out.

i have taken off nortons on about 8 clients computers (replaced with avast), and you’d think i was jesus raising the dead they were so happy…..

Why on earth is norton anti-virus is such a mess..it baffles me,
and yet its the first name that comes to peoples mind when the word anti-virus is mentioned.

    Cindy..
iam really at a lost as to what is the root of your problem. Reformatting your hardrive may cure all ailments..but i dont
like recommending this..it is such a time consuming process.

    Hi Steve

The Norton story as I understand and remember it goes like this. Back in DOS 3.2 and above days. Maybe earlier, Norton utilities was the greatest thing going since the desktop computer. We all relied on his various utilities and they were great.

Then he sold it to Symantec and that’s when it started going downhill. Symantec started expanding it and for some reason it really became a system hog. I used it right up to the end of W98SE. I found my system getting slower and slower and everyone in the know, wound up having to re-format their HD’s every year or so just to get all the crap out. I don’t know the why’s and wherefor’s but I got tired of it along with everyone else I knew or came in contact with.

I found out about Nod32 from ESET, a little known foreign company and went with them and for years they were by far the very best. However due to some personal personal issues with ESET which I won’t go into (it’s still a very good antivirus) I started looking around and finally settled on AVG (then a popular free antivirus). Stayed with them for a long time but then was looking for a good software firewall to replace MS’s first efforts ar a firewall. Couldn’t find one that didn’t conflict with one thing or another and when AVG came out with their Internet security suite, I bought a 3 pack license for all my computers and never look back.

Great thing about AVG is I can do anything, even render video with AVG in the background it it never messed up my computer or projects. I never have to disable it, even when installing new programs. It just doesn’t conflict.

I got some personal thoughts about Symantec but I can’t back them up with facts so I won’t share them. Surfice it to say, I’d choose another AntiVirus software.

It may just be part or all of Cindy’s problem.

    Thanks for the insight Allen,
I agree, years ago it was really good and reliable then started gradually turning into a bloated mess…i didnt know all the details
about being sold to Symantec etc. just knew i got to really hate it.
I am really puzzled as to why they had to turn this former gem
    into a bloated monster.

I however then gave Mcafee a spin and never looked back…it doesn’t
conflict with anything…nor slows down system resources or anything like that, just beautiful integration all around. I also used AVG and also can vouch for it.

I am somewhat positive that its responsible for Cindy’s problem..
and probably occurred immediately after it was automatically updated
    online in the background.

I did try some of what you suggested, but Vegas still won’t open.

    Two things:
~ Vegas worked prior to loading Corel products
~ I had installed some Codec pack – but I can’t find where it’s installed at

I know lots of people of “issues” with Norton, I never have…and, I don’t think it’s the problem for the “initializing audio engine” where Vegas hangs up when loading.

Also, someone had asked about the OS I’m using and it’s Vista, which again, I’ve never had a problem using, just a little learning curve at first.
