    Hi all.

I am having a problem with Vegas Pro 13.

During rendering, it renders fine until about half way, of which it then renders completely black. The weird thing is that the text added ontop renders fine, along with the audio of the video + background music.

In the timeline + preview, the video is completely fine and works all well.

I’ve tried everything I could find online – unchecking the tabbing out thing, restarting vegas + computer, making sure it’s not rendering a loop region.

    Please help!

    Thank you, Bill.

    Hi Bill

Are all of the clips in your timelines from the same source/type/format ?

We don’t have much to work with here info wise.

    Cheers !

Hi Bill, as Francois suggest, can you provide more about your system and project?

System and OS specs, CPU and RAM, GPU, Vram, and driver version, screenshot of your Project settings, screenshot of your Render Template settings, using the free app Mediainfo (in text mode) a screenshot (or copy and paste) the detailed spec’s of all your different source media. Details about your project workflow including any Fx’s you have used.

Have you tried turning GPU acceleration of video processing to ‘Off’ (Preview > Video tab)? Have you tried rendering with CPU only?

Have you ever render successfully with a project similar? The more details and information you provide the more likely it will be that a user here can help with suggestions to solve your issue.

    Best Regards……George

Francois – All the clips are from my iPhone. They were all recorded the same way and there’s no difference between them, except the footage it holds.

    George –

    System / OS Specs – Windows 10
CPU – Intel i5-3700k(around that). I’ve rendered videos before with no problem.
    RAM – 16GB
GPU – AMD 370(I believe. I honestly can’t remember, once again, rendered before with no problem)
Vram – Not entirely sure how to check, but if it’s using space I haven’t used on the hard drive, over 1TB.
    Screenshot of project properties –
    MediaInfo –

I have not tried this – I personally do not see how this would change anything but I’ll start to render it again now.

Yes, I’ve rendered many videos before. This is the first time using Iphone recording files. I do have the driver needed to use them.

    Thanks, Bill.

I forgot to answer the workflow question.

I only used blur to blur out my face in certain parts. Nothing major though.

tAll the clips are from my iPhone. They were all recorded the same way and there’s no difference between them, ! I think there are difference between them – Your iPhone use variable frame rate for exposure – go into MediaInfo – View Tree and look for Frame rate – NLE’s don’t like variable frame rates – try convert your footage with Handbrake !

    Hi Bill

As Ole said, never use footage taken directly from your IPhone. Convert to a constant bit rate format. Avoid the aggravation and pain.

    Cheers !

    Hi Bill,

Thank You for posting the information. My suggestion…..when you use Mediainfo, first go to the ‘View’ tab, scroll down and select ‘Text’ mode, then load your source media. The text mode provides a lot more important information about the video format as well as audio. If you do this I’m sure you will see that your phone footage is in fact, as Ole pints out, variable frame rate. I can see that, how you attempted to match the non-standard frame rate of 31.579. problem is, the frame rate will change throughout the video, it’s in part the way iPhone’s adjust exposure. As Ole and Francois point out, Vegas (and most NLE’s) really don’t like variable frame rate footage. I’ve been successful using stuff directly from a phone, but that is usually just short clips, anything longer, or with more variation in the frame rate and Vegas will most likely fail.

With that said I agree with Ole and Francois, convert the iPhone footage using Handbrake, or some other program like ER Media Tool Kit, or you may be able to do it from within Vegas rendering one or maybe to clips at a time to something like Sony XAVC-Intra (really large files, but visually lossless. Handbrake is probably the fastest with a slight learning curve. ER Media Tool Kit is both fast and simply.

When I asked in my previous post, it was unknown that your footage was from a iPhone and the variable frame rate is most likely the culprit. So asking you to turn Off GPU acceleration and rendering with CPU only is a method to determine if there is an issue with your display adapter. So turning those off is a valid trouble shooting technique.

Hope after you transcode/converter your iPhone footage and replace the original in your project with the intermediates, your project runs and renders smoothly.

    Best Regards……George

Thank you all. I shall get to work on it now.

Will I have to reedit the whole video? My guess is that I do.

I never knew that it had a variable frame rate, so I learnt something new today! ☺ Thanks a lot again.

George – When I said “I do not see how this can affect it”, I was not meaning to be rude. Thank you for explaining how it troubleshoots it ☺

    Thanks all again!

“Will I have to reedit the whole video? My guess is that I do.” No, just convert your footage to constant frame rate and then in Vegas replace your footage !

I’m not sure I understand sorry.

    I’ve never “replaced” footage before.

I got handbrake running, slowly converting all the files in a constant 30FPS 1920×1080. Am I doing this right? Sorry to be a pain.
