vegas pro 12 project veg. file not opening
Posted by Des Swot on February 23, 2013 at 8:34 pmI am desperately hoping any member has a solution to a problem I am encountering with vegas pro 12.
I have just completed a large project of 100 minutes. What I did was I broke up the entire project into numerous small veg. projects which i find works for me.I then copy paste these smaller veg.s into my final large veg. for rendering.
However I have found I cannot open the final veg. file when it seems to get over about 60 minutes.Whether this is due to a few fx such as colour match i am not sure. The smaller veg. projects open up no problem at all.
I am using windows 7,with an intel i5 machine 3.2Ghz and 8GB of ram.

February 23, 2013 at 10:14 pmThis has happened to me as well but instead of opening the veg project file after you have opened Vegas, try to open the veg file in Windows Explorer instead of inside Vegas.

February 24, 2013 at 8:07 amHello Roger thanks but you have baffled me here. What I do is double click the veg.file with the default opening programme being Vegas Pro 12.
I cannot understand how you open it within Windows Explorer, could you please elaborate as I must be missing something.

February 24, 2013 at 11:55 am1. Don’t open Vegas
2. Open Windows explorer and go to the folder where you have the veg file you want to open.
3. Double click on the veg file and that will open Vegas and the project you are working on.Roger Bansemer – PaintingAndTravel.com

February 24, 2013 at 12:51 pmThanks for trying to help but that is exactly what I am doing. In fact all my veg.project files are stored in a folder in Windows Explorer and I open them from there.
This is quite a strange phenomenon.I have never encountered it in Vegas 10 but then my projects were not this large.I have say my final veg.project open that I am preparing for rendering, and am pasting previous clips from other smaller projects into it.When it gets to a certain size of over 55 minutes it will not open.
I have even tried bypassing certain clips that have extra fx’s on them but this still does not help.
My only solution it seems is to paste all the edited clips into the final project and render from there without closing the veg.prog.If I need to re edit something I will have to paste the clips gain,re edit and then do a final render.
It is a big nuisance but I am running out of time and have no other alternative.

February 24, 2013 at 6:21 pmI have no solution for you. I guess you can try opening the veg file within Vegas, just the opposite of what I suggested.
Also try one of your backup files and see if that opens. It’s listed as name.veg.bakRoger Bansemer – PaintingAndTravel.com

February 24, 2013 at 8:14 pmMany thanks I did try both your last suggestions but alas still no joy.The final veg.project file will not open with any further media than it has already got.
Just luckily I have the 90 min. project broken up into 3 separate pieces of veg. files which I can copy and paste into the final veg. and then render immediately before I close it.It is not a train smash except being a nuisance and taking up extra precious time.I have already wasted so much time trying to sort the problem out I am now going ahead with the last resort.
Once I have rendered it,if I find an error which is likely I have to do the whole copy paste thing again.Anyway what’s new 🙂

February 26, 2013 at 6:12 amI am confused about your workflow. Are you opening multiple instances of Vegas or using embedded veg files? If you are opening multiple instances of Vegas, then you will run out of RAM because each of them reserves some RAM for its exclusive use. Go to Preferences and reduce your Preview RAM to 1Mb and see if that helps. Don’t be tempted to go to zero Preview RAM because Vegas does need some – even if you never use RAM preview. (I suspect that an ancient programmer used some of the Preview Ram as a scratchpad memory.)

February 26, 2013 at 5:43 pmSteve I am only using veg.project files (there are 3 that make up the project)and I do not open all of them either.
Then finally I will copy and paste all 3 veg. files one at a time into my final veg. file.It is the final veg. file that once gets over approx 55min of media will not open.At say 50 minutes it opens fine then when I add a few more clips it will not open. The final veg. file I try and open without any other prog. open because of the ram issue.
I get a vegas not responding message which remains for 30 minutes before I close the veg. prog.
My preview ram is set at 200MB out of 7,200MB.

February 26, 2013 at 6:52 pmYou really didn’t answer the question, or I didn’t ask it correctly. Your description of “copy/paste” in the original post is confusing because you don’t copy/paste the veg files – you just drag them to your timeline. Do you only have one instance of Vegas running and you are putting the individual veg files on the timeline? (This is nesting).
I do this frequently on long projects – up to two hours long – where the main project starts with a nested veg file for the opening, then a nested veg file with the content, then a final nested veg file with the curtain (end segment).
Is this your workflow: Open a new project and drag your segment veg files to the timeline?
If yes, then you’re doing it correctly – now try rearranging the veg files. Put the last first, drag others to the timeline at random. If there’s something wrong with one of the veg files it may fail to load.

February 26, 2013 at 7:35 pmMaybe my workflow is incorrect but this is how I do it.
I have 3 veg. files created which make up the completed movie each 30 minutes long.Veg.1 will have the first 30 min. veg.2 the 2nd 30 min.and veg.3 the last 30min.
I open up veg.1 but I do not drag the veg. files 2,and 3 from the explorer window within veg.1 onto the timeline as you suggest. What I do is open veg. 2 and then copy the whole timeline of clips from veg. 2 and paste them onto the timeline of veg.1 after the last clip in veg.1 thereby creating continuity.
It is only when approx. 60 min. of clips have been pasted across before veg.1 refuses to open. This never happened in vegas 10 and shouldn’t to my knowledge happen in vegas 12.
When you drag the veg. files from within vegas onto the timeline they are rendered and you cannot continue editing them as normal which is not what I want.
