  • Vegas Pro 10 + Magic Bullet Looks 1.4 = Crash?

Posted by Jay Ache on January 21, 2011 at 11:58 pm

    My problem is this:

I am currently running Windows 7 64-Bit, with Vegas Pro 10 32-bit installed and Magic Bullet Looks 1.4 installed. I’ve been attempting to open a project file with Magic Bullet Looks applied to all of the shots, but the project crashes immediately after the splash screen with a “Vegas Pro has stopped working” with the following error information:

    Problem Description
    Application Name: Vegas Pro
Application Version: Version 10.0a (Build 387)
    Problem: Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
    Fault Module: C:\Windows\system32\nvoglv32.DLL
    Fault Address: 0x190E3AD0
    Fault Offset: 0x00673AD0

    Fault Process Details
    Process Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0\vegas100.exe
Process Version: Version 10.0a (Build 387)
    Process Description: Vegas Pro
Process Image Date: 2010-10-05 (Tue Oct 05) 21:43:54

The color correction was applied by my colorist friend who is using almost an identical setup to mine and had no problems with 64-bit Windows 7 and 32-bit Vegas Pro 10. Another interesting note is that I am able to open a new project file and drop raw footage into the timeline and add Magic Bullet Looks to the footage without any trouble. It’s just opening this project file crashes the program.

When I uninstall Magic Bullet Looks 1.4, I can open the project file just fine — except I get a missing plug-in error and all the hours of color correction are gone.

I’m losing my mind here. Any ideas?

OK, now the problem has moved… I upgraded my video card drivers (GeForce GT 220) and it is now allowing me to open the project file just fine. However, it is essentially locking up and crashing whenever I attempt to hit play or render the footage out.

If you look on Magic’s site you will note that Looks 1.4 shows compatibility only with vegas 7 and 8 and it shows no compatibility for win7 (64) at all. They have also not put forth a single update for Vegas since it came out (not enough business). Given all of this, it’s going to be real tough to trouble shoot the issue at all.

I would say you’re probably 100% correct, except for the simple fact that my colorist was able to color flawlessly and access the file without any troubles already. So, that’s a paradox.

yes, I read that. But I also read:

“The color correction was applied by my colorist friend who is using almost an identical setup to mine and had no problems with 64-bit Windows 7 and 32-bit Vegas Pro 10. “

The term “almost” will have to be carefully defined… and with no official support, it will be quite hard for anyone other than you and your colorist to work the problem.

My son has had very good luck running Vegas Pro 9 32-bit with Magic Bullet Looks 1.4 on Windows 7 64-bit. (Magic Bullet isn’t compatible with 64-bit Vegas or with Vegas 10).

He also increased the amount of memory that Vegas 9 32-bit can access using CFF Explorer (see https://www.bing.com/search?q=cff+%22vegas90.exe%22&form=QBLH&qs=HS&sk=&pq=cff&sp=1&sc=8-3)

Wow… I’m impressed. That hack has really traveled. The wonders of the internet never cease to amaze me.

Ironically the “problem description” describes the problem quite nicely (10a). Try updating to Vegas Pro 10c. I bet that’s what your friend is using. 10a was very buggy and shouldn’t be used.

I’m 99% sure that Magic Bullet Looks can’t work with any version of Vegas Pro 10 because MBL hasn’t been updated to Vegas 10’s new plug in architecture.

I’d love to be wrong because they are two of favorite tools, but I think if you double check with your colorist, you’ll find he was using Vegas 9 or earlier.

That’s not the case. I use Magic Bullet Looks all the time with Vegas Pro 10 32-bit. It just doesn’t work with any 64-bit versions of Vegas.

32bit here. MBL in 10c is fine.

    Grazie
