  • Vegas’ poor use of memory? Unused RAM. Project ‘full’? Vegas crashing.

It’s unlike me to accuse Vegas of having weaknesses, but this problem seems to be Vegas’ fault, not Vista’s.

I can run >40 ~intensive programs using a total of 3.1 GB = 78% of Physical Memory. I can actually run more – everything was still running fine at 3.1 GB usage.

But even on a fresh boot, with only Vegas running, and memory-hogging ‘services’ stopped, Vegas crashes when it gets to ~400 MB usage.

I’m able to run the ‘Regions to Subclips’ script in one Vegas instance/window, while having my ‘full’ project open in another window (along with 40 other applications), so why can’t I run the script in the ‘full’ project window? (I only call it full because it won’t let me add more media files or subclips.)

Bizarrely, when a ‘full’ Vegas project is open – and nothing else – the Task Manager says 68% of Physical Memory is used, even though Vegas is the only memory-intensive process running.

I have experimented using the Task Manager’s Resource Monitor extensively – I have tons of data which I don’t want to bore you with.

I could buy even more RAM (more than 4 GB), but it seems Vegas won’t use it.

I think you should send the crash report to both Sony and the author of the script.

I have heard that Vista had some corruption issues regarding AVI file header functions. Any script using such functions may cause host application to crash. Have you applied Vista SP1 patch?

I should have said here, as I have said in previous posts, that the problems occur not just with this script. The project becomes ‘full’ – it won’t let me add more media to the project by any means.
I’ll write a more detailed reply in a couple of hours.

(Still, yes, I should send this issue to the script writer and to Sony. Assuming the problem persists, perhaps the script writer can get the script to give a precise error message and no crash, instead of a generic error message followed by a crash.)

Yes I have applied Service Path 1 to Vista. (I will add SP1 to my signature, which I created yesterday, but failed to include with my posts.)

It also crashed when I tried copying a bin of subclips from one project to a ‘full’ project.
(Repeat: I only call it full because it won’t let me add more media files or subclips.)
