Vegas 8 and Canon 7D footage
Posted by Rob Weidenfeld on September 21, 2010 at 3:44 pmI’m trying to edit some footage shot with a Canon 7D (1080p/24), after transcoding it using several different methods found both here and on YouTube, etc. – all involving MPEG Streamclip – and when I bring the footage into Vegas 8 (build 144), the audio is there, but the video is black.
Is Vegas 8 not compatible with this type of footage? Must I upgrade to be able to edit my stuff, or should I just look into getting Adobe Premiere, which I understand handles such footage natively…?
Considered buying NeoScene, which seems to be the transcoder of choice for PC users, but if it’s still not going to work in Vegas 8, what’s the point?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

It would be hard to say since we don’t know what YouTube video you watched and you didn’t say what codec you used. What you are experiencing sounds like whatever you transcoded it to, was a codec that Vegas cannot use. Are you using 8.0c? You should be using the latest update.

There is no need to buy NeoScene. You already own the CineForm codec which comes standard with Vegas Pro 8.0. So there is nothing to buy, and nothing to complain about. Just render to CineForm in Vegas and edit your 7D footage smoothly.

Wait, the Cineform codec was bundled with Vegas 8? I had 8 and now have 9, where is the Cineform located in the render options? The help file doesn’t seem to mention it at all. -

September 21, 2010 at 8:12 pmI own a 7D, and Vegas Studio Platinum HD 10.0.
Buying Cineform Neoscene saved my life 🙂 Before: crashes all time. After : no crashes any more (well, except for DivX/Xvid rendering. But this is another story).John, I am also surprised that you say the Cineform codec is bundled with Vegas. In my Studio Platinum version at least (the cheap version, I agree), I don’t remember I had any Cineform codec until I bought the Neoscene. But this might be because it is not the Pro version of Vegas. Or just because In don’t remember well enough.
Rob, in the event you would have to buy Cineform, as you may have seen, it can be freely evaluated for 7 days.

Yes, the CineForm codec has been bundled with Vegas 6.0, Vegas 7.0, and Vegas Pro 8.0.

In Vegas Pro 8.0 go to File | Render As… select Video for Windows (*.avi) with any of the templates that have “intermediate” in the name like: HDV 1080-60i intermediate. These are the templates that use the CineForm HD Codec V2.8

It was only shipped with the Pro version of Vegas 6 through 8.

September 22, 2010 at 9:38 pmThanks Jon and everyone for the responses. I didn’t specify which YouTube video I’d watched because I actually found several… but mostly the consensus was to use the Avid DNxHD codec, which is one that I tried, among others.
After digging relentlessly through some posts, I came across a post by you, Jon, suggesting that someone with Vegas 8 revert to an older version of QuickTime to clear up the “black video” problem, and, voila, that actually worked for me, too.
I guess I don’t need to buy NeoScene if Vegas Pro contains the same codec, so that’s another excellent tip, Jon, thanks a bunch.

September 23, 2010 at 10:39 amYou’re welcome. Using old software is always tricky business because things keep moving forward and old software often breaks. I’m glad that all worked out for you.

October 18, 2010 at 6:07 pmDave,
I followed John Rofrano’s instructions in a different thread and uninstalled the “new” Quicktime and reverted to an older version. This allowed Vegas to show the footage in the timeline, instead of just a black screen. I was going to purchase one of the transcoding options talked about frequently, but found (also thanks to John) that Vegas has the Cineform codecs installed, so I render using the appropriate one for my resolution and have been quite happy with the results.
