Using FCPX to make informercial vs Motion

Well, I make real informercials and I do 90% of my onscreen stuff in FCPX. It’s pretty rare that i have to go beyond key framing or the canned text animations, effects, etc to get what I need.

Hey Jeff! Thanks for the reply! So what you’re saying is all the key framing for the infomercial can be done in fcpx correct? I’ve actually never key framed in fcpx but I’ve done a lot of key framing in motion.

All depends on how over the top it needs to be. For me it’s mostly just text zipping across the screen, flashing, growing, spinning, etc so all of that can be done in final cut. If you need a fancy path, or niceties like ease-in, ease-out, then I head over to Motion.

Thanks Jeff! Now do you sometimes do the entire infomercial in motion if you go with more fancy stuff?

Not usually. Most of my stuff is 28 minute long form so it’s all Final Cut. Everything is edited first, then motion graphics added, then if anything needs to be done in motion, I’ll export that segment, do my animation, then often publish it back to final cut as a title or generator or whatever – on the basis that if needed to do it once, I’ll probably want to do the same thing again in the future.

This is certainly not something you’d want to do in Motion, no. Motion is by no means an NLE. If anything, then you would simply make TEMPLATES of any needed specialty titles/title animations and publish them to FCP for further customisation as needed. For example if there is a default title template that you like, but just need a few tweaks, simply open a copy in Motion with a simple right-click on it in FCP, make the needed changes and save. That’s why it works the way it works. 😉

Yep, no problem – with the exception of the the particles and 3D stuff which you’d have to create somewhere else, then import.
