  • Turning a QT Ani+ into a Fill & Matte in the Timeline?

Here is the situation. I often have to layoff graphics toolkits. So, say an animator gives me a Quicktime Animation +Alpha. Normally I would have to take this into After Effects and render out a Fill and a Matte. FCP has an Extract filter in the Matte folder of the Video Effects, and it does allow you to see just the RGB channels and just the Alpha channel. But it only works when parked on a frame, not when you hit play. I know that I can put the animators movies in timeline and then set the alpha channel to None in order to get a fill, but can anyone think of a way to put a movie in the time line and tell it to only display the alpha channel as a b&w matte. I would think there has to be a simple filter out there that lets you chose what channel is displayed for that clip; red, green, blue, alpha, rgb, or rgba.

That is interesting. It would appear to me that the extract filter is not working correctly. But maybe I don’t get it. Anyway, here’s the workaround…

Place your ani+ clip on track 2. Place a black slug on track 1. Place a white clip (create it using the matte generator) on track 3. Right click on the white clip and choose composite mode>travel matte alpha. Now you hae white using the matte of your ani+ clip to to key over the black, creating a matte. Render away.
