  • Trying to give a travelling ‘gleam’ to an object…

Posted by Aza Allen on April 7, 2008 at 1:31 am

    **I have AE 7.0***

I have a logo that I want to add a travelling gleam, like a metallic object tilting in a light.

I have a few objects behind the logo that I don’t want affected.

I’ve tried creating a white solid the same size as the logo and then creating a mask on that solid in the shape if the intended gleam, but everytime I create a mask on the solid, it resizes the white solid to the dimensions of my mask.

I try to create another mask so I can keep the lower layers from being affected by my white solid ‘gleam’ layer, but that doesn’t work.

Is there an easier way to accomplish this?

Put the white solid in a pre-comp with your logo. Place it above your logo and enable the ‘Preserve Transparency’ switch (it’s one of the layer switches, also accessible in the Layer menu). This will limit the sheen to only the areas where the logo is visible.

    even easier, Generate>CC Light Sweep.

Create additional elegance by laeyring up with Bevel Alpha so the gleam travels mostly on the bevel layer.

Sometimes easier is better… sometimes more flexibility is better. That will depend entirely on how picky you are… I guess I’m pretty picky =)

    > Is there an easier way to accomplish this?

That was the kicker for me.

    > I have a few objects behind the logo that I don’t want affected.

    And that.
