  • Trouble Importing XML File from FCP 7 into FCP 6.06

Posted by Tahir Jetter on September 9, 2009 at 6:39 pm

    Hello,

An editor gave me a project w/ corresponding media files that he’d worked on in FCP 7. I’ve upgraded to FCP 6.06. Knowing that he’d bring the project into FCP 7, he thought to export an xml file that he’d suggested would be able to be re-imported into FCP 6.06 or any version of FCP 6.

In trying to re-import this xml, I get an error message that reads, “please choose a translation document file.” I have no idea what this is supposed to correspond to. Please, help! The xml file, project file and corresponding media are all on the same drive.

    Thanks,
    Tahir

First off, they need to export an XML, version 4….it defaults to version 5. Second, you need to go FILE>IMPORT>XML. Then FCP knows it is trying to import an XML data file.

so are you suggesting that the xml file hasn’t been exported properly? when i open it up in textedit, it looks legit. it’s just that when i try to import into fcp 6.06, I get that error message.

I am suggesting that the VERSION of the XML is not one that FCP 6 recognizes. FCP 6 uses XML v6. FCP 7 defaults to XML v5…NEWER. FCP 6 will not be able to read that format properly.

And I also suggest that you didn’t import properly. You don’t just go FILE>IMPORT>Files (CMD-I). You have to go FILE>IMPORT>XML.

    gotcha.

yeah, had been importing by going to file > import > xml

but hrm. i was under the impression that one of the functions of xml was to enable fcp users to transfer edited projects seamlessly in a backwards compatible fashion.

suggesting my only option is to re-export from fcp7? if so, how can i have the project read by fcp6? can i at all?

    thanks,

I had exatly the same problem. You need to open the XML File with TextEdit and change the entry at the beginning of the file:
    to

After importing the XML File from Final Cut 7 it will report some uncritical errors and works ok.

@Shane Ross FCP 6 uses XML v6. FCP 7 defaults to XML v5…NEWER. FCP 6 will not be able to read that format properly.
The Idea is good but not right explaned. FCP 6 uses XML v4 FCP 7 defaults to XML v5…NEWER. FCP 6 will not be able to read that format properly.

Change the entry at the beginning of the XML File from:
    xmeml version=”5″ to
    xmeml version=”4″

This post was super-helpful to find. However, although I was able to finally get past the error messages and import the xml file, I seem to have only got part of it, one folder of master clips. When I look at the doc in text edit, I can search and find the names of the missing clips. Any thoughts as to why I’m not getting them?

    Thanks.
