February 13, 2013 at 3:22 pmMike Kujbida offered this tip from Paddy and it worked for me!
Please navigate to the following folder (make sure hidden files and folders are being shown):
C:Users[your user name]AppDataLocalSonyVegas Pro12.0Media Pool Thumbnails
Select all of the contents of this folder, and delete them. Then launch Vegas again, and you should be back in business.

February 18, 2013 at 3:45 pmyip – same probs here with thumbnails – SV10 is crash central – considering Avid – but so used to how SV works after many years. Switch thumbs off and – no crash’s – so far. SV10 – Grrr…!

February 18, 2013 at 4:08 pmI appreciate the issues you’re having with Sony Vegas, we’ve all had bugs from time to time. But the thumbnail creation issue that causes Vegas to crash, I believe is isolated to the latest build of Sony Vegas 12 pro. The evidence seems to point to that, and I don’t recall any of these issues with Sony Vegas 10. Not that it didn’t have issues.

February 18, 2013 at 7:48 pmThanks for reply. It’s weird but I can confirm that, with thumbs dissabled, my project opens and I can edit to my hearts content. However – as soon as thumbs enabled – in under 10 seconds – blam – good old exception error and that’s yer lot matey!
I admit I have 2 files on the timeline around 18GB in total – s*d all effects – I mainly use P&C – .mts and mpg4 – hey ho.
Who knows – is it SV10? – SV9 seemed to be rock solid – however – also my new Sony cam records HD so I am dealing with much larger files…
I have (like all of us?) spent hours and hours editing a project – then to find it crash’s – it’s heartbreaking – but I have looked at Adobe forums – Avid forums – they are all the same…. guess I’ll just muddle through….
Gonna go and have my tea now – roast chicken – at least that wont crash… 🙂

February 18, 2013 at 7:58 pmThis was posted on a different thread a few days ago. It might relate to your situation. You might give it a try.
There’s a similar thread about this on the Sony Vegas forum and here’s the workaround, courtesy of Paddy from Sony.

February 18, 2013 at 8:09 pmThanks so much for reply. Yes – I have seen this solution – however – it don’t work for SV10 – that folder doesn’t exist – but – happy to work without thumbs – shame tho.
I have to say I was going to upgrade to 12 – but downloaded the trial – it just crashed – so gave up and went back to 10.
Then again – I havent re-installed windows (7X64) for over 2 years (wow!) everything else seems bomb-proof – mebe a clean install – but awwww – what a pain… 😉
Thanks again.

February 18, 2013 at 9:54 pmYour case my be related to other issues, as to why SVP 12 crashed from the get-go would be an indicator. My experience was that Vegas 12 was more or less fine until build 486 came along. I do grow weary of debating exactly what makes Vegas crash, while other editing software users debate more finer points. In order to trouble shoot this thumbnail issue I uninstalled and re-installed SVP 12 so many times my license stopped working. If it’s not one thing it’s another.

February 18, 2013 at 10:13 pm…blimey – well credit to you fer sticking with it!!
I think that ultimately, Vegas is cracking – however – the stability issues really spoil what should be an enjoyable experience. Perhaps I expect too much – lets face it – the capabilities of computers in general are absolutely astonishing – and to have editing capabilities such that SV offers for little money is incredible – but perhaps I am getting too ‘off topic’ (I have little experience of forums)
I will use SV10 without thumbs and hope that, perhaps, SV13 will be a stable offering – I dread switching to Premiere – I found the UI ghastly – and Avid is sooooo much £.
Hey ho.
