What is this invisible layer good for?

I tried to apply any effect without any success.

    Am I doing something wrong?

What effect are you trying to apply to it? Not all effects will work with the invisible layer. Only effects that generate something (such as Timecode) will follow through.

It’s totally useless then. An absolutely worthless and useless feature.

When I read about it, I was jumping out of happiness (with the credit card on my hand), I believed it was
like the useful, wonderful implementation in Avid, in which you can apply (and stack) ANY effect over several clips.

Eighteen months to upgrade and you couldn’t do better than this?

Shame on you Adobe, You fooled me!

Lucky me I decided to wait and try the demo first.

BTW, not impressed so far. In fact, some undesired changes.

Well, it is useless for what you wanted to do with it, yes. It does make a good placeholder. And that’s about all I can think of to do with it.

“It does make a good placeholder”

    .- A placeholder of what?

If I can’t put effects on it nor adjust nothing, what good is this for?

Video? Titles? Graphics? They don’t need a placeholder.

It’s a useless feature, my friend, don’t try to justify the unjustifiable.

The only thing it adds is a sad dissapointment. Premiere 2.0 would be better off without it.

Oh, I don’t know if it’s completely useless. How about these effects:

    Checkerboard
    Circle
    Ellipse
    Grid
    Lens Flare
    Lightning
    Paint Bucket
    Write-On
    Timecode

Want any of the above effects in oriented in 3D space? Throw on a Basic 3D effect on the transparent video clip, after applying one of the above.

In addition, if you have any 3rd party effects that generate text, like 3D text, etc., they can use the transparent video clip.

I agree that many users will not use it. But it still has *some* worth.

“I agree that many users will not use it”

    OK

    Let’s tone it down:

    Is 98.7% worthless.

I expected someting at least “close” than the implementation in Avid.

After 18 months, I expected more from the developers of After Effects.

It would have been a great, great feature, a big point ahead of Adobe’s competition.

It turned out to be a big dissapointment to add up.

    Regards.
