  • The Foundary Tacker/Boujou/Mocha!?!?

Posted by Stuart Samuels on November 11, 2012 at 2:05 pm

    Hi.

Could someone offer me advice on how to track the front end of the film camera in the clip below please? I have tried Boujou, The Foundry Camera Tracker and Mocha with absolutely no success.

    Track clip

It’s only a test shoot but I simply want to attach some text to the end as if it’s sat in scene and firing out of the lens (I hope thats makes sense!?)
I’m surely clearly something very wrong but I just can’t figure it out.

The footage is from a Canon 600d.

    Many thanks

    Stuart.

If you have AE CS6, you can try the new inbuilt 3D Camera Tracker. It gives pretty good results.

    Hi.

Thanks for your suggestion but I’m still using 5.5 at the moment.

The Foundry 3D Tracker and Boujou both fail to recognise any usable track points on the camera at all. To me it seems like it should be relatively straightforward so I’m assuming it’s something I’m missing/doing wrong rather than the Foundry plug in or Bojou, or a problem with the footage itself.

You dont want a camera tracker to track the front of the camera the talent is holding, you need a motion tracker like Mocha which is free in AE.

But you will need to learn how to use it. Its a powerful tool, but fairly complex.

You could try the regular tracker built into AE. That might be able to do it.

    Ah ok, that makes sense.

The Foundry/Boujou for Match Move, Mocha for tracking an object etc.

I have tried Mocha but it didn’t get anything useable though…Back to the tutorials!

    Thanks

Once you get the basics of Mocha down, it should be an easy track.

I really think the regular Motion Tracker that has been a part of AE for many years would do a good job too.

Would the AE tracker be able to handle the perspective change?

    Thanks again.

Yes with a 4 point track.

Mocha will probably be a better choice though now that I know you need perspective.

Thanks again for all the advice.

My only export options in Mocha are either Transform, which apparently doesn’t include perpective data and Corner Pin, which dosn’t seem like the righ thing to me…

I’ve attached 3 images below that should hopefully roughly demonstrate the type of thing I am trying to achieve.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Tom for correcting me.

    Stuart

In Mocha, if you go to Track panel(below your Viewer) , you will notice that there are option for Transform,Rotation, Scale, Shear and Perspective.

Click on the Export Tracking Data button and copy the data from clip board. Then just paste it to a solid or a null object in AE by pressing ” Cntl/Cmnd + V ”

You also need to DELETE the ANCHOR POINT keyframes when you are using transform to track an Object.

Because of what you want the text to do, this is a very advanced track.
Mocha is a planar tracker. You really need to track data from the right side plane and then the left side plane of the camera for the text to animate in the manner you illustrate.

Just tracking the front plane of the camera lens wont have it do what you want I think.
