I wanted to see what people here thought would be the best sequence setting for me to use for a project I’m about to start.

First, let me say that the delivery for the video will be: 1) .flv for web streaming 2)VOD MPEG for Comcast and 3) a variation of the VOD MPEG for another broadcast partner. Nothing will be going to tape. The VOD settings are based on specs that the partners requested and I’m compressing the final product in Episode Pro. Oh, and it all has to be 4×3 720×480, NTSC 29.97.

The footage I will be editing with is a combination of:
    1. DVCPro50 and DVCProHD from the HVX200 camera (maybe 10-20%)
    2. clips from youtube (HQ quality only), and other websites. (40/50%)
    3. clips from DVDs (5%)
    4. created graphics (FCP and Motion – full screen, lower 3rds) (10%)
    5. still photos with motion (10%)

For other projects when I’ve had a majority of DVCPro50 or DVCProHD clips, I’ve worked in the according sequence setting, but I’m thinking that maybe I should be editing in a different setting when the majority of my clips are either photos/downloads/flvs/mpegs/etc. Should I edit in Prores 422 NTSC? Uncompresed 8bit? I will be doing a fair amount of color correction and resizing in FCP.

Also, with the youtube clips, what I’ve been doing is converting the .flv files to DVCPro50 (or whatever format I’m editing in) clips in MPEG Streamclip. I figured that if I can get all my media converted to the sequence setting before editing, I won’t have to render every time I add the clips to the timeline. Is there a better method for doing this?

Thanks so much for your advice, and let me know if I left out any essential info.

I’d use ProRes or 8-bit uncompressed. Capture what you can to the format of your choice, and use Compressor to convert the rest. It will do a much better job of scaling than FCP. Make sure to choose the highest quality settings in the Encoder tab in Compressor.
