Gary, there is no list simply because there are way too many file formats and kinds of computers out there these days.
When I was running Vegas 4.0 on a now-lowly P200, DV-AVI and small jpegs were my best friend 🙂
Today is a completely different story as new technology is being introduced on what seems to be a daily basis and we’re expected to be able to edit it 🙁
I’ve had students bring me in footage that was shot on gear ranging from a VHS camcorder to a Blackberry.
I did have to convert the Blackberry video to a useable format but it worked.
I just finished shooting a press conference with a brand new JVC HM700 that records ta 1920×1080 in high bitrate mp4 format.
I dropped the files on my desktop machine just to have a quick look at it (a mere 3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB. of RAM) and it had no problem playing a single stream back full frame full res at Best/Full.
To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
