  • Storyboard – creating a plugin to export/share/print/view timeline as storyboard

I searched for “storyboard” and got 7 results, none of which were relevant.

By storyboard I mean something that looks like a cartoon with thumbnails for each [item] in the timeline.

I want to do 3 things with storyboards:
    1. send them by email or post them on a website, as html or php or doc files. (?or xml with xslt templates?)
    2. print them to facilitate meetings with my creative partners.
    3. facilitate thinking about possible arrangements of story sections. (I can move sections (or grouped sections) on the timeline, but my primary partner cannot, and I would prefer the simplicity of moving items in a storyboard.)

Windows Movie Maker lets you switch between Timeline view and Storyboard view, but doesn’t let you print or export the storyboard.

If we View -> Edit Details, we can see the timeline arranged as a spreadsheet, in order. Combining that with Project Media’s thumbnail view could give us at least some features of a storyboard.

Jill, as long as you’re using Vegas Pro (Movie Studio doesn’t support scripting), go to the Vegas script section here on the Cow and grab the Thumbnail script.

This script will create a thumbnail pic (by saving a snapshot) of each EVENT on the selected track. The file will be saved as the same name as the event in JPG format.

Since this script was written back in the Sonic Foundry days, you will need to make one change to be able to use it in current versions.
Open the script with Notepad, change the line import SonicFoundry.Vegas; to import Sony.Vegas; and resave it (File Save).

The Media Snapshots tool in Excalibur can do this easily. It can do it based on time, markers, regions, events, etc…

    Thanks Mike and Edward,

I edited the thumbnail.js script, changing the size from full=true to =false, and I got 164×120 thumbnails, which is perfect.

I found a few mistaken thumbnails, where the image from one subclip has the name from another subclip. I’m guessing this is due to subclips from different parent media having identical or overlapping start times. I’ll investigate and report back.

The thumbnail.js script produce mis-named clips when events overlap (partially or fully).

Is there a way to lay out subclips from multiple parent media without overlapping?

To lay out subclips on the timeline, I can select items in the Project Media window, right-click and select:
“Lay Out Tracks Using Media Date/Time Stamp”
but these tapes don’t have date/time stamps.

(If I select “Lay Out Tracks Using TimeCode”, the subclips can overlap if they come from multiple parent media.)
