  • Sony SxS sticks in to Mac Pro for FCP

Are there any other alternatives to adding a way to read the new Sony SxS memory sticks into a Mac Pro desktop besides the USB unit that Sony sells with the new XDcam EX camera? I am concerned about the transfer speed of USB being a lot slower than an Express Slot. I will not always have my MacBook Pro on hand to get the files off the cards and into the Mac Pro. And even that route takes two steps.

    Thanx,
    Gary

Well you could always try it out with this one at 1/6 the price of the Sony unit.

Keep in mind here, that all we are doing is copying data. There is no playing or editing from these cards.

you do have the ability to mount the cards over your FW much like the HVX does.

the USB unit is only about 10% -15% slower than the xpress slot.

thanx all, if it’s only 10% or so slower over usb, then that is not too bad.

just curious why it takes two steps… surely you can drag and drop media from the mounted express slot straight to your networked mac pro?

i see one step to the laptop (express slot) and another step from the laptop to the mac pro desktop.

    hmmm
i think thats an unnecessary step you are taking!
im sure macs must be able to do this, i do it on my pc all the time, copy from the drive of one (even usb or external – makes no difference) straight to another computer on the network… it does not have to be copied to the first computer, just goes immediately over the network from external device to second computer.
    try it, it must work!

I’m a bit confused about the best workflow for the EXCAM EX.
We get in our SSs MPG2 (35Mbps, LongGOP..etc), enveloped in a MP4. OK.
May I download those files as they are to a HD? Do they need to be transcoded?
May I bring those MPG2-MP4 to an FC sequence and edit with the original codec?
I don’t care if i need transcoding to get an easier editing, but I would like to be able to save the original files for archiving (data BlueRay. EXDCAM discs no dream about).
    Thanks for your help,
    Rafael

    Ah Ha!

You just hit the nail on the head! I’ve started calling the EX, the Sony P2. Sony is jumping into the market of what do we do for archiving.

    Good Question!

The only choice is to purchase a BluRay drive for you computer and dump to BluRay. Sounds good, right? Well, any of your other computer also need BluRay drives to read these discs. This could get pricey real quick. Maybe a very high end Sony laptop is the idea in the field…

The U1 drive isn’t able to write at the moment. SO…. that’s not an option. Sony means Soon, Only Not Yet.

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not bashing the XDCAM EX. We’d love to replace our HDV Z1s for these BUT what would be our archive format? BluRay is the only option but who has time in the field to say “Wait, I have to dump my cards to BluRay”, after shooting for a max of two hours maybe. Do you see my point?

Yeah, I could just dump to hard drives but who has time for that also. Then you still have to get them into your edit station using the XDCAM Transfer Software so that FCP can use them.

This is the ONLY reason we haven’t purchased any of these cameras yet.

SO…. to answer your question, Rafael. Yes, they have to be transcoded before you can edit in FCP.
