I’ve heard this camera was a light hog, but “Wow!”, I’m always amazed how sloooow it is when I work with it. I’ll position a 500W softbox 4′ from my subject and still have to pump 3db of gain. It’s much slower than the Sony HDV cams.

Is it me or do you have the same issues? If Roy Scheider ever used this camera, I can hear him now, “I think we’re going to need a bigger light kit.” Apologizes to Speilberg and my fellow Cow members.

Thanks for, dare I say, shedding some light on the subject,
    Jeff

    PS I’m usually shooting 720 or 1080 60i

Something definitely sounds wrong. You’ve got a 500w softbox at 4′ and still need gain? I know low-light isn’t great for this camera, but I shot a bowling alley scene adding only a couple 150w fresnels to the mix and it worked great. They just had a couple overhead flourescents that we changed the bulbs on to color correct. I even had to back the fresnels off about 10 feet from the talent since I was getting hot spots. Granted, your softbox will knock down some light, and I’m guessing your instrument is open face, but your setup should be enough to practically blind someone. 😉

I’m stumped. Did you check your user settings?

I’m guessing you are talking about the HVX. Yes, it depends on the softbox size, wall color etc…

On interviews for example, I wouldn’t put anything else than my 1K open face Arris, that’s using 2 medium chimeras with the 40

Ooops…I’m using the HVX-200. Minor detail.

You’re doing something wrong — maybe the ND filter is stuck in or something.

The HVX is a full stop faster than the Sony FX1/Z1U, and over stops faster than the V1U/FX7.

It’s rated at 320 ISO when using the normal gamma, about 250 when using the cine gammas.

To clime in for that Dodge Dart comment. I had a ’69 Dart in High School that totally kicked a$$. Small block 340, fastest small block around. (Springsteen’s Glory Days plays in the background)
