slow AMA with REUTERS H264 footage
Posted by Ingo Witte on September 27, 2017 at 9:49 amhi colleagues,
i am working for intern. broadcaster with Reuter Archive footage access on Avid MC8.8.,
when i link it with AMA its very slow and impossible to edit properly (on different machines). normaly Avid handles h264 in MP4 containers good, but this Reuters stufff….baaaad!i talked allready to the Reuters support, they have not clue…!
has anyone the same problem and maybe a solution?

September 27, 2017 at 12:49 pmI cant speak specifically to Reuters footage, but I have seen some types of H.264 (GoPro?) footage make MC basically unusable, forcing me to transcode. Not sure if the footage was long GOP, which is more processor intensive.
Newer versions of MC have improved linked footage performance. If you are in a position to upgrade, I’d try and see if it helps.

September 27, 2017 at 4:08 pmThank you for your response John, but I already have the latest version of mediacomposer. It is playing, but very very shutting and delayed.

September 27, 2017 at 6:07 pmAny reason why you aren’t transcoding it?

September 27, 2017 at 8:29 pmHi Shane,
I just don’t have always the time…under time pressure editing for news, 5 clips 3min each, coming on the Reuters site, I need maybe 15 sec from each one, transcoding of all clips needs 9min each…impossible. -

September 27, 2017 at 8:32 pmI was experimenting with 3rd part progs, to change the container without recode, sometimes after this the clips where prefect playing with AMA…sometimess…

September 27, 2017 at 9:19 pmWell, if you have problematic clips, often that is faster than dealing with the skipping, and searching for answers.
And you can subclip after AMA and transcode only the subclips.

September 29, 2017 at 7:21 pmYeah, that’s VERY VERY sluggish. it must be highly compressed or something. Definately transcode. It’ll take less time to do that than it does trying to play this thing.

September 29, 2017 at 8:20 pmThank you for your effort. It must be the coding or the Avid system, both crazy for professional broadcast company’s….
