Shooting feature – can I use FCPX?
Posted by Kyler Boudreau on November 2, 2012 at 3:25 pmEveryone, I’m under a time crunch. My question: I’m shooting a feature film on RED and need to know if I can cut it using FCPX.
I’m an Avid and FCP7 veteran editor, and my initial reaction to FCPX was to stay Avid forever. However this indie feature doesn’t have $2500 to drop on Avid MC.
In all reality, will FCPX handle a feature shot on RED cameras?
Thanks for any feedback.

November 2, 2012 at 4:08 pmI’m editing a feature now which i shot on a Canon XF300 and the working is going smooth and very quickly, much faster than previous work on FCP 7 and Avid 6.

November 2, 2012 at 4:21 pmGet a 30 day trial FCPX
Install the recent RED Plugin
Import RED files
TESTYou need a fast system. Fastest iMac for example.
On a MacPro the red rocket is supported ,but that’s 2 Avid licences 😛

November 2, 2012 at 4:31 pmIt’s totally doable with X but test first and have the right gear. How many RED productions go down in flames because they find out the hard way it’s not simple. 🙂 You need a beefy Mac with an Open-CL graphics card with plenty of VRAM and 8+GB of RAM. You also need fast storage- standard USB and Firewire drives won’t cut it.

November 2, 2012 at 4:53 pmAwesome – thanks. I need my workstation to be mobile, so I’m going to pick up the Retina Macbook Pro and cut with that I think. Will just have Thunderbolt storage and I’ll not be cutting raw files.
Was just nervous about the new FCPX….have loved the stability of Avid and would be using that if I had the money.

November 2, 2012 at 6:48 pmYep- doable on a rMBP- I’d recommend at least a Promise Pegasus for storage https://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?m=192®ion=en-global&rsn1=40&rsn3=47 also don’t forget RED’s plugin- https://www.red.com/downloads

November 2, 2012 at 10:25 pmFCPX is as stable as any other NLE I’ve used over the last decade.

November 4, 2012 at 5:29 pmThanks everyone for the responses. I love indie film forums.
Just ordered a Macbook Pro Retina model – I’ll report back once we start shooting. That will not be until March however – but I’m going to start using FCPX on projects this month to get used to it. Ugh…yet another NLE to learn.
