  • Shoot flat? or not?

Posted by Justin L. on February 2, 2011 at 6:13 am

    Hey there again!

I’m arguing with myself again, and this time, i’m arguing about if i should shoot flat, meaning no picture profiles at all. and if i do shoot flat, do i have more flexibility in editing in vegas? Or is it just better to not shoot flat and set ur picture profile to what you want your video to look like in post?

    thanks!

Are you using a custom White Balance?

I always white balance, and use Warm Card for doing so, they give you options when shooting. If nothing else, be sure to do a basic white balance so you can be sure when working in post.

Do you know where I can just print off those White Balance cards?

They are expensive, I googled to find the cmyk color readings for them and had them printed on 2’x 4′ foam core so they are large enough for me to balance the cameras when I am a distance from a stage….I don’t remember where I found the CMYK numbers….

Does your camera have a histogram?

I wonder if a WB target like this my help when shooting from a distance.
34″ Photovision Target it folds to about a 12″ circle.

You probably already know this but you should set your exposure before you do a custom WB. Use your histogram to set the exposure. Histograms can be difficult to interpret so that’s why I like using a WB Target like this. Look HERE. https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5047/5339895801_6756618578_z.jpg

When you shoot the target your histogram should have three distinct spikes and look like this https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5208/5339895739_ab18f26ef6_z.jpg

The can then be used to set WB. All three areas can be used. After that any apply any profile you like but getting it right in-camera will save time in post.
