As you can tell from my thread, I may not be the best source of information for this format. I suggest you start a new post – you may get more attention that way.

    Good luck!

If you shot on a Varicam, the native format is 720p not 1080. If you have a 1200A or 1400 deck with HD-SDI, you can use the deck to extract a 1080p23.98 signal if you prefer, otherwise edit @ 720p23.98.

    Hey Jeremy

So I see you’ve wandered back to this thread, and inadvertently addressed another question I had.

So I’m the second editor on this fairly large project that was started out of house. My instructions were to capture a bunch of new footage, matching the original project AT ALL COSTS. Now the in-house techs are all Avid guys and have connected to the 1200 deck using SDI. Result-footage doesn’t match (bigger data rates, footage won’t play on timeline without render). So I connect using FireWire, and everything works.

So when you capture using SDI, as opposed to FireWire, is there a conversion going on? Hence the higher data rate?

Meanwhile, the lead editor and the techs are all convinced that SDI is a better way to go, but I haven’t found any reason to think so. Walter Biscardi weighted in on an earlier thread, and he can’t see any quality difference between FireWire and SDI when ingesting.

Hmm, I see a couple of things going on:

[Budrick21] “Now the in-house techs are all Avid guys and have connected to the 1200 deck using SDI. Result-footage doesn’t match (bigger data rates, footage won’t play on timeline without render).”

That means you haven’t selected the proper codec to capture to. IF you have to render the resulting captured files, you have not selected the proper easy setup that matches your already captured footage and timeline. My guess is that you selected an uncompressed setup instead of a DVCPRO HD setup. Or perhaps you selected a 59.94 frame rate instead of a 23.98 one.

[Budrick21] “So I connect using FireWire, and everything works. “

That’s because you obviously chose the proper easy setup.

[Budrick21] “So when you capture using SDI, as opposed to FireWire, is there a conversion going on? Hence the higher data rate?”

It all depends on what codec you are capturing to. The deck is outputting an uncompressed signal, so it is up to you to capture in DVCPro HD or Uncompressed. FCP and your capture card will do that translation not the deck. WHen using firewire, you can only capture DVCPro HD.

[Budrick21] “and he can’t see any quality difference between FireWire and SDI when ingesting.

I can’t either. I use an HD SDI based workflow and I think Walter uses a firewire workflow for the most part. He also stays native DVCPro HD and I don’t. (If you read this Walter, sorry if I am speaking for you incorrectly or out of turn). I always bump to uncompressed 10 bit. I find it makes a better picture, color grading is more forgiving, graphics pop off the screen and everything from tape masters to DVDs to web movies look just a little bit more clean, but it comes with a price and that’s fast storage. Hopefully ProRes 422 will help alleviate that bottleneck while providing a 10bit workflow.

All I know is at the time, the techs said “Here you go-everything’s working” and then hightailed it. And of course, the system wasn’t working.

Because they were determined to make the SDI work, they came back and did it again. This time, I could ingest and lay to the timeline, but I could tell by looking that I wasn’t getting the full picture – the item properties checked out, but the picture was expanded 10-20% and washed out. Any idea what would cause that?

I get the logic of capturing to 10-bit, but since the project wasn’t begun that way, and it’s a high-pressure situation, I’m stuck with what I’ve got.

    What do you mean?

The image appeared to capture normally, had the correct dimensions and aspect, but the subject’s head was cut off slightly, as were the edges – as if the picture had been expanded. When captured, the image sat on the timeline, no render needed. It matched the sequence settings, but there was a loss of information around the edges.

Something is not setup properly or you inadvertently scaled that clip. Right click (or option click) the clip in the timeline and choose remove attributes and then click the basic motion box and hit okay.

Well, there was definitely some voodoo going on there, but it wasn’t that – I checked the motion attributes and they were all normal, and scale was 100%. I’m off today, so I can’t do any more checking. There are just too many hands on the equipment.

    Guys

MANY AVIDs cannot capture 720p24 from a Panasonic tape.
It is not a supported format

if your avid is compatible it will only do it over FW and you have to check the dialog box to capture only the flagged frames.
