    {{{{{the difference between the HVX and the SDX gets arguable, no doubt. resolution count alone will make the HVX more suitable for film-out. but the SDX will still be a “better camera”, with better lens, with more dynamic range}}}}

The above quote inspired me to write this and come up with an example of how to look at these cameras vs cameras for fun.

I will make a comparison between these cameras using some other cameras.

SDX900 vs AG-HVX200 as mentioned in the original post……

The Digital photo-cams used for example:
Canon A95 consumer digicam vs Canon EOS-20D

Varicam which would be like a Canon 1DS will not be in this list since it was not in the original post that made me want to write this as the 1DS is not in this test. So I won’t even add this one.

I do believe the AG-HVX200 and Varicam will be close when looking at the final images between the two. As the Z1U is closer to CineAlta HDcam then it is farther away based on many user reports including Cinematographer Jody Eldred { source: March issue of Videography 2005 Pg. 76. }.

The electronics in the Canon EOS-20D blow away the A95 like a howitzer at two feet away. Ouch! It’s just not even fair to compare these two cameras together. That is why I will use them to illustrate how close they still come to one another, and how they are closer then they are farther apart in a percentage scale.

I shoot with Canon DSLR’s so I am very familiar with that gear. I bought my brother the A95 for Christmas. So I know this digicam a little bit.

Printing out a 8×10 or larger from these two cameras, the differences are not so far apart to my surprise.

Here Some Differences I have noticed and my brother never has:
More Chromatic aberrations ( purple fringe ) in the A95 lens.
Lens contrast are a little different
A95 Lens is a little softer.
Some extra noise but not much more on the A95
Little more compression artifacts due to Canon offering better JPEG settings on higher end DSLR’s .

What I notice is that these cameras come close enough that the non professional will never care or maybe notice since the final product results are closer then they are farther apart based on a percentage scale.

Pd150’s-DVX100’s-XL1/2’s have filmed big screen movies. They looked alright considering that they are standard def. cameras. Now HD cams have arrived. They are at-least 4 to 5 x sharper and better then their SD cousins. So now this extra 4x + will translate to the final product.

In my opinion the viewer/audience won’t be distracted by the blurry soft of sd video as they might have been. The threshold line for these HDcams have been crossed.

No it’s not Varicam HDcam or SR, but it’s passed a certain quality point ( that line drawn in the sand ) that translates into far far less visible distraction as it once was if any to the regular audience.

    Finally, were at the tests
Here are two samples/links to illustrate these examples, from the mentioned cameras:

Important info on Canon EOS-20D images
The first image was shot with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens,
The second image was done with the Canon 24-85mm F3.5/4.5 USM

The A95 lens is consumer grade optics and is not at all in the same class as the ones used on the 20D, especially the USM lens on the second photo.

    Important info:
Just to note, this is being written for “” Fun “” and is not based on scientific laboratory proven experiments.
